A Crucial Distinction Sets Star Wars Outlaws Apart from Starfield and No Man’s Sky

As video game worlds continue to expand, developers are constantly finding new ways to make them even larger. However, each game has its own unique approach to achieving this.

We’ve moved past the era of “See that mountain? You can go there!” and entered the age of “See that planet? You can fly there!” Two highly anticipated upcoming games, Starfield from Bethesda and Star Wars Outlaws from Massive (the developers of The Division), exemplify this trend.

While Starfield takes a similar approach to games like No Man’s Sky by procedurally generating its planets, Star Wars Outlaws is taking a different path. In an interview with Edge magazine (via Eurogamer), creative director Julian Gerighty confirmed that the planets in Outlaws are handcrafted.

Gerighty explained, “We haven’t procedurally generated an entire planet,” adding that each planet in Outlaws will be roughly equivalent to two zones in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey.”

Gerighty also mentioned that this approach will make the space in Outlaws more “manageable,” although he did not disclose the number of planets the game will include.

This stands in contrast to Starfield, which features over a thousand planets, many of which intentionally remain empty. Bethesda relies on procedural generation to create these planets and populate them with various enemies, encounters, flora, fauna, and quests.

Starfield will also have its own set of bespoke planets crafted by Bethesda, ensuring consistency across all players. The idea of using algorithms to generate unique planets was popularized by No Man’s Sky, but it often resulted in a lack of visual diversity.

Starfield will be released on September 6 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
