T-Mobile Removes Debt on Phones Purchased by Certain Former Sprint Customers

On Reddit, some T-Mobile subscribers are sharing screenshots of a recent message received from the carrier. The message announces that “Sprint is now T-Mobile: Good news! We have forgiven the remaining balance for the installment billing agreement(s) listed below. You now own your device outright, giving you the opportunity to use its trade-in value when upgrading to a new device. This change will be reflected on your bill within 1-2 billing cycles.”
A user who received this message shared that they still had a full year left on their installment plan, which T-Mobile eliminated suddenly. Some speculate that T-Mobile had to take this action due to difficulties in converting certain Sprint leases and installment contracts to the T-Mobile side. Therefore, T-Mobile made this generous offer to assist the remaining ex-Sprint subscribers in transitioning to the Un-carrier.

As explained by a Reddit user named “xzxnightshade,” a segment of Sprint customers never made the transition to T-Mobile for various reasons, and still had outstanding debts with Sprint for their phones. T-Mobile decided to facilitate the migration of these customers by buying out their debts to Sprint. Once the debt appears on the bill, customers can be fully transitioned to T-Mobile, similar to unlocking a phone.

So, if you received this message from T-Mobile, congratulations! It is genuine, and you now own your phone free and clear. T-Mobile states in the message that the device can now be used as a trade-in when purchasing a new handset.
We also considered the possibility that wiping out the remaining payments may have compelled T-Mobile to limit the eligibility for a 75% discount to certain relatives arranged by representatives. However, we are not seriously suggesting this; there is no actual connection. The reality is that T-Mobile was likely compelled to eliminate the remaining payments owed to Sprint, possibly due to issues related to transitioning the last group of Sprint customers to T-Mobile.

If you received one of these notices, don’t waste time overanalyzing it. Enjoy T-Mobile’s generosity; for some reason, the carrier has paid off your debts. Congratulations!
