If you have strong 5G coverage, The Nothing Phone 2 performs well with Verizon

Sometimes, you just have to break the rules and take a chance. I recently attended Nothing’s product drop in New York City and had the opportunity to try out the Nothing Ear 2s and the Nothing Phone 2. As a long-time Verizon customer, I was initially concerned about testing the phone and its features because Nothing had mentioned limited support for Verizon on its website. However, they have since removed Verizon from their tech specs, which is not a positive sign.

However, I discovered that as long as you have an active SIM card that was previously in a Verizon-certified phone, you can simply insert it into the Nothing Phone 2 without any issues. I tested this and found that the phone’s mobile data, calls, and texts all worked perfectly, including RCS messaging. I didn’t receive any messages scolding me for using an unauthorized device.

During my week using the Phone 2 as my primary device, I noticed that the network indicator showed 4G, 4G Plus, 5G, and 5G Ultra Wideband. The VoLTE (voice over LTE) icon was also consistently present. I’m not entirely sure what 4G Plus means in Verizon terms; it could be LTE Advanced, or perhaps the phone is just confused about the network it’s connected to. Nevertheless, I haven’t experienced any service disruptions while traveling around Manhattan and Brooklyn. However, it’s important to note that 5G coverage, while often underwhelming, is readily available in NYC.

The experience may be less predictable in other areas, mainly due to the lack of support for band 13 on the Nothing Phone 2. Band 13 is crucial for Verizon’s 4G LTE network, particularly in rural areas. If you venture outside of a city or crowded suburbs and lose 5G coverage, you’re likely to experience signal issues. This is why Verizon is unlikely to fully certify Nothing’s latest phone.

As a tech reviewer, I have access to multiple phones, so I’m not concerned about using the Nothing Phone 2 in the city. However, if I were traveling far away from urban areas, such as visiting remote regions, I wouldn’t take the risk and rely on this phone.

Regarding the phone’s unique glyph system, I find it gimmicky for the most part. However, I appreciate having the upper right LED assigned to Messages, as it’s useful to know when I receive a text message when my phone is face down. Apart from the lighting system and network limitations, I generally like this phone. It offers excellent battery life, a vibrant display (and I’m quite picky about screens), and software tweaks by Nothing.

The ability to place quick settings toggles directly on the lock screen is surprisingly convenient. While I’m currently using basic settings, I’m sure there’s more customization available. So far, the Phone 2 operates smoothly without any noticeable hiccups, and the camera produces satisfactory shots most of the time.

To summarize, if you have Verizon and are interested in trying out the Phone 2, it is possible to use it with your carrier. You’ll be able to send and receive texts and calls, and data works well. However, it’s important to note that outside of 5G coverage areas, you may not have as strong of a signal as you would with other phones that support all of Verizon’s bands. Therefore, it’s a good idea to have a certified phone on hand as a backup if you decide to invest in this new gadget.
