Blizzard’s MMO, ‘World of Warcraft Classic Hardcore,’ Introduces Permadeath to the Game

Blizzard is introducing a thrilling addition to World of Warcraft Classic – hardcore servers. These servers take inspiration from the game’s popular Classic Hardcore mode, where each character is limited to a single life. If your hero dies, there is no resurrection or ghostly return to their body. Even powerful class abilities like the Shaman’s Ancestral Spirit spell or the Warlock’s Soulstone spell cannot revive your character. Paladins also lose the ability to bubble hearth out of dangerous situations.

However, your character doesn’t simply disappear after death. They remain as a ghost, allowing you to stay connected with your guildmates and friends made during your adventure. If you still wish to continue playing your character after their demise, Blizzard will provide free transfers to non-hardcore servers.

Given the nature of World of Warcraft, it’s expected that some players may attempt to deceive others into killing their characters. To address this concern, Blizzard has implemented specific restrictions in Classic Hardcore that are not present in other game versions. For instance, players cannot lure monsters to terrorize low-level characters in different areas. Additionally, engaging in PvP combat requires deliberate flagging beforehand. Blizzard has introduced this failsafe to prevent unintentional aggressive actions against players who are already flagged for PvP.

Speaking of PvP, Classic Hardcore shifts the focus away from player-versus-player combat. Players cannot queue for battlegrounds. However, Blizzard has introduced a new dueling mechanic that allows players to challenge one another to a deadly fight. Victories in these duels grant a permanent cosmetic buff called “String of Ears,” which keeps track of the number of successful takedowns.

Hardcore servers are set to be added to World of Warcraft Classic by the end of summer, with a public test build of the mode becoming available on June 29th.
