YouTube is set to revolutionize its content creators’ reach by introducing an innovative AI-powered dubbing tool that translates videos into multiple languages. This groundbreaking feature, unveiled at VidCon 2023, aims to provide a seamless and cost-free method for creators to translate their content into languages they don’t speak. This is particularly beneficial for smaller channels that may lack the resources to hire human translators. To bring this concept to life, YouTube’s Vice President of Creator Products, Amjad Hanif, announced the integration of the Google-created Aloud AI and the collaboration with the AI team from Area 120, a division of YouTube’s parent company known for its experimental technologies.
Easy Translation
According to the official Aloud website, the translation system operates by first transcribing a video into a script using AI technology. Creators can then edit the transcription to correct any errors, provide clarifications, or emphasize time-sensitive text. Afterward, the edited script is fed back into Aloud, which automatically translates the video into the desired language. The newly dubbed content can be published by uploading additional audio tracks to the original video.
A Google representative clarified that creators don’t need to comprehend the languages they are dubbing into, as Aloud handles the complexities of translation, timing, and speech synthesis. Creators only need to review and verify the transcription.
Future Changes
While the launch date for the Aloud update remains uncertain, YouTube is committed to expanding the capabilities of the AI. Currently, Aloud can only translate English content into Spanish or Portuguese. However, there are plans to incorporate support for other languages, including Hindi, Indonesian, and various dialects.
In the future, YouTube plans to introduce additional features such as voice preservation, improved emotion transfer, and even lip reanimation to enhance enunciation. The platform also intends to implement safeguards to ensure that only creators can dub their own content.
The Aloud AI is currently being tested with hundreds of YouTube creators, with plans to expand the trial over time. As of June 2023, more than 10,000 videos have been successfully dubbed in over 70 languages.
If you’re interested in joining the early access program, you can fill out the official Google Docs form. To get a preview of an Aloud dub, you can watch the channel trailer for the Amoeba Sisters on YouTube. Simply click the gear icon, go to Audio Track, and select Spanish to hear the robotic voice generated by the AI.
