According to statistics from BookMyShow, Oppenheimer has surpassed Barbie in terms of ticket sales in India. As of Sunday morning, July 23, BookMyShow contributed a significant 74 percent to the overall box office revenue from India for the Christopher Nolan-directed biopic, selling 1.4 million tickets. Not far behind, Greta Gerwig’s candy-coated Barbie also had a strong showing, with BookMyShow contributing an impressive 70 percent to the overall box office collections in India, selling over 500,000 tickets. Experts had predicted this outcome due to the advance ticket bookings for Oppenheimer on IMAX opening much earlier than usual.

Ashish Saksena, COO – Cinemas at BookMyShow, stated, “With Oppenheimer and Barbie finally releasing across screens nationwide, it’s been a clash of the titans at the box office with both films exhibiting sheer cinematic brilliance, and fans flocking to theatres for the big screen extravaganza.” Last week, BookMyShow reported that Oppenheimer had already sold over 300,000 tickets in advance bookings, while Barbie had sold around 54,000 tickets.

It’s worth mentioning that Oppenheimer was the only IMAX release this past weekend, resulting in increased ticket sales in cities such as Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, and Chennai through the BookMyShow app. Despite the contrasting themes between the two films, moviegoers have shown strong interest in both, with many opting for a double feature. Pune, Kochi, and Ahmedabad are leading the next tier of cities in terms of ticket sales. The press release also emphasized the promotional material and marketing efforts that encouraged audiences to experience the most immersive IMAX formats, even at non-typical timings like 12am and 3am shows, something previously seen with Avatar: The Way of Water and major Marvel Cinematic Universe movies.

While there is no official confirmation of box office numbers for Barbie vs. Oppenheimer in India, reports suggest that Oppenheimer is leading by a significant margin. However, internationally, Barbie had an impressive opening, earning $337 million globally, setting a record for the biggest debut weekend of the year in the US and Canada with a collection of $155 million. Outside North America, the film made $182 million in ticket sales. Analysts in India predicted that Barbie would make around Rs. 15 crore, significantly behind Oppenheimer.

Oppenheimer, featuring Cillian Murphy in his first lead role in a Nolan film, made a worldwide debut of $174.1 million. This was expected given its R-rating for “prolonged nudity” and language, combined with its relatively lesser marketing due to the Hollywood actors’ strike during the peak of premiere events. According to Deadline, these figures represent the highest-grossing opening weekend for an R-rated film this year in the US, surpassing John Wick: Chapter 4. The film earned $80.5 million in North America and another $93.6 million overseas.

Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are now showing in theaters worldwide.
