Not only did he contemplate a romantic relationship between Bruce Wayne and Lois Lane, which was unsettling given the implications of the Snyder Cut, but his unconventional thoughts on superheroes in general, as expressed in an interview with Letterboxd, may not align with Warner Bros.’ desire for profitable PG-13 films.
“Watchmen to me is like the ultimate deconstructionist comic book. Superheroes have sexual anxiety. They’re all agoraphobic and incestuous and insane and addicted to violence. I always said when I was making Man of Steel – you have to know the rules in order so you can break them. Well, I broke them first, and then I made a movie. It was the wrong order, but it’s fine.”
While Snyder’s observations about superheroes may hold some truth, it’s easy to imagine how concepts like “sexual anxiety,” “incest,” and “insanity” would have been received in a WB boardroom pitch.
