YouTube might be the next gaming venture for Google

Google is once again dipping its toes into the gaming industry with a new product called ‘Playables,’ which is currently being tested on YouTube. The company sent an email to its employees, inviting them to participate in the testing phase of this new feature. Playables allows users to play various games directly within the YouTube web or mobile applications. The initial games will be “easily shareable games,” including the popular arcade game Stack Bounce. These games can be played on YouTube’s website using web browsers or on mobile devices running on Google’s Android or Apple’s iOS operating systems.

While there is not much information available about the project at the moment, a spokesperson from YouTube stated that gaming has always been a focus for the platform and they are constantly experimenting with new features. However, they have nothing specific to announce at this time.

It’s worth noting that Google previously announced the shutdown of its consumer gaming service, Stadia, due to insufficient user engagement. Despite this, the company recognized the potential of utilizing the technology from Stadia in other areas, such as YouTube. The decision to host online games on YouTube is part of CEO Neal Mohan’s strategy to explore new areas of growth, especially in light of the decline in advertising spending.

It remains unclear whether ‘Playables’ will be available to all YouTube users or if it will be a perk tied to YouTube’s Premium subscription. The email sent to employees did not mention how the company plans to monetize these games.

In conclusion, Google is expanding its presence in the gaming industry with the testing of ‘Playables’ on YouTube. This move comes after the shutdown of Stadia and aims to introduce online gaming to the popular video platform, opening up new avenues for growth.
