Yamato, Beloved Character from ‘One Piece,’ to be Voiced by Michelle Rojas

It’s always surprising to realize that the massively popular anime series One Piece has aired over a thousand episodes. Although the series is coming to an end soon, there is still a significant portion left since the anime adaptation is slightly behind the source material. This means there will continue to be casting announcements like the recent one: Voice actor Michelle Rojas has been cast as the fan-favorite character Yamato in the English dub.

The announcement came after Crunchyroll confirmed that they would be debuting the English dubbed version of the anime series on their platform. With this voice cast announcement, it’s clear that Crunchyroll will provide an English dub that covers the recent Want Arc, which is the section where Yamato is introduced in the storyline. Yamato initially considers joining the Straw Hats but ultimately decides against it, becoming one of the team’s significant allies.

Yamato is a recent and incredibly important addition to the One Piece cast. The character challenges the traditional notions of gender by impersonating their favorite legendary samurai and eventually embracing their new identity. The inclusion of such a character in a popular anime series is a significant step forward for Japanese culture, which often lags in LGBTQIA+ representation and the portrayal of female characters.

Michelle Rojas Is a Veteran in the Anime World

Rojas has extensive experience in dubbing Japanese anime characters. She started her career with series like Tenchi Muyo! and Rio: Rainbow Gate before working on well-known anime shows such as Future Diary, PSYCHO-PASS, Tokyo Ghoul, and Fairy Tail. Interestingly, this is not the first time Rojas has provided her voice for One Piece as she previously voiced the character Gonbe back in 2005.

The casting news is just one exciting development for One Piece fans in 2023. The anime and manga will soon be adapted into a live-action series on Netflix, starring Iñaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, and Mackenyu. This eight-episode show will cover the East Blue Arc, which is the first arc in the anime series where the Straw Hats come to life.

Although Crunchyroll has yet to announce the debut date for the new dubbed episodes, Netflix will premiere Season 1 of One Piece on August 31st. Don’t miss the trailer below:
