“Xbox Chief Phil Spencer Assumes ‘Full Responsibility’ for Redfall Debacle, Admits Disappointment in Own Performance”

Microsoft and Xbox have faced some tough times recently. Initially, their efforts to acquire Activision Blizzard were blocked by Britain’s competition regulator due to concerns regarding cloud gaming, and then their tentpole exclusive, Redfall, faced negative reviews criticizing its technical and creative flaws. Currently, the game has a mediocre overall rating of only 61 on OpenCritic. Following this backlash, Xbox Chief, Phil Spencer, has taken full responsibility and reflected on the company’s recent failures, the community’s expectations, and their upcoming goals.

Two days after Redfall’s disappointing launch, Spencer appeared on the Kinda Funny Xcast to discuss the game’s failures candidly. He acknowledged that the game fell short of expectations and was a massive disappointment for the Xbox community who lose faith in them. Spencer confirmed that Redfall’s price of $70 was costly and took full responsibility for releasing a game that had to be great. Additionally, he defended Redfall’s developers, Arkane Austin, by saying that he wouldn’t push against the creative aspirations of their teams, but acknowledged that they had not met their internal goals.

Regarding British antitrust regulator Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) decision to block Microsoft’s takeover of Activision Blizzard, Spencer stated that the company would appeal this decision to bring the lucrative portfolio of the Call of Duty franchise under the Xbox umbrella. During the interview, he addressed Xbox’s position in the gaming space relative to Sony PlayStation and Nintendo. Spencer emphasized that Xbox does not intend to out-console Sony or Nintendo and instead plans to focus on its unique services such as Game Pass, cloud and PC gaming.

Despite facing criticism, Spencer confirmed that Xbox, which owns Arkane-parent Bethesda, will work on improving the game and is committed to delivering a 60fps patch on consoles on priority.
