X: Video calls are coming to X, confirms CEO Linda Yaccarino

Soon after taking over X, Elon Musk announced his ambitions to transform the platform into an “everything app.” In line with this vision, the company has introduced several new features, such as the ability to read/post long texts and watch hour-long videos. And now, the platform is adding another exciting feature: video calls.

During an interview with CNBC, Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, confirmed that users will soon be able to make video chat calls without sharing their phone numbers. Yaccarino also discussed other upcoming features, including creator subscriptions and payments. This confirmation comes shortly after X designer Andrea Conway posted a message on the platform, stating, “just called someone on X” along with four head-exploding emoji. At that time, it was unclear whether Conway was referring to voice or video calls, or perhaps both.

What This Means for WhatsApp

Meta-owned messaging app WhatsApp will now face direct competition from X. With X allowing features such as video sharing, payments, DMs, microblogging, and support for sharing videos and photos, it presents a formidable rival to WhatsApp. Meanwhile, Meta has recently launched their own platform called Threads to compete with X, but has experienced a significant decline in monthly active users after an initial surge of 100 million sign-ups.
Yaccarino’s Role at X

Yaccarino emphasized that she has autonomy under Elon Musk’s leadership. While Musk oversees product and development, Yaccarino’s role encompasses all other aspects of running the company. In a recent reorganization of the top leadership and operations, it was reported that Musk and Yaccarino will jointly oversee the trust and safety team. Musk will focus on X’s product and engineering team, while Yaccarino will be responsible for divisions such as human resources, legal, finance, sales, and operations. Additionally, the company is currently seeking a new leader for brand safety and suitability, following the departure of the previous head of brand safety, A J Brown.
