Woman Floored By Colleague’s Compliment Comeback—Internet Equally Confused

Misunderstandings at work happen for many reasons, and sometimes even for no reason at all. A woman’s reel on TikTok detailing her colleague’s reaction to a compliment she paid her has left the internet confused.

In the viral clip, shared in January, under the username aleawagner, the woman can be seen sitting on a bus with a hand touching her forehead, as she reflects on her colleague’s cryptic comeback earlier at work.

The video comes with a caption that explains: “Today I told a girl at my work that her earrings were really pretty and she said ‘Oh thanks they’re actually not coloured contacts they’re just special for my eyes.’ I honestly just went along with it after that.”

If not dealt with promptly, misunderstandings at work can create unbearable working conditions. Workplace disputes are actually more common in America than you may think.

Employees in this country spend around 2.1 hours per week in conflict, according to research by workplace app ZipDo, and that over 85 percent of employees experience conflict to some degree.

Moreover, about 57 percent of employees have revealed to have witnessed confrontational workplace conflicts resulting in personal insult or injury, while 27 percent have witnessed conflicts ending in personal attacks.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across Instagram. It has so far received over 6.9 million views and 348,000 likes on the platform, and most of them are just as confused as the poster is.

One user, Laney, commented: “Guys she probably heard irises.” And art_zanda said: “Is she a non-native English speaker? I can imagine myself mishearing it as ‘eyerings’ and assuming that you mean the iris, like rings around pupils.”

ksol added: “Probably just thought she was saying iris, most languages it’s pronounced more like ee-ris anyway.”

Tatum wrote: “Honestly my hearing is trash so usually after a couple days it registers and then I realize why I got a funny look.” And _Liberty-Maria_ said: “Did she maybe hear eye rings? For whatever reason ahah.”

Another user, Noire Licorne, commented: “I’m confused at the ‘they’re just special for my eyes.” And Sophia added: “When I was in highschool I was using both hands doing some kind of project and I was so focused on it and this girl asked me what time it was and I said ‘I’m actually ambidextrous.”

Yousra joked: “She’s so me. I’m deaf ash I be answering w whatever comes first to my mind.”
