With whom does Devi ultimately end up?

Editor’s Note: Major spoilers for Season 4 of Netflix’s Never Have I Ever follow.

As the final season of Never Have I Ever draws to a close, we bid adieu to Devi Vishwakumar and her band of buddies as they depart Sherman Oaks High School and embark on their respective paths. Throughout the show, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan has grown alongside her character, Devi, as an actor and a friend, just as we have grown with her. Every year of high school presented Devi with a new set of challenges, but she has come a long way from her formerly reactive and obsessive nature. Now, Devi has channeled these traits in a much healthier direction.

Not only has the show shone a light on South Asian culture that has long been misrepresented, but it has also explored the nuances of friendship and mental health. The finale, after 40 episodes, aims to bring closure to the relationships that have formed throughout the show, while answering the question that has been looming throughout: who does Devi end up with?

Devi’s senior year at Sherman Oaks is filled with romantic and academic drama. She is ghosted by Ben after losing her virginity to him, has an awakening with the school’s resident bad boy, and faces Princeton drama. In the penultimate episode, Devi’s mother finally finds out that she wasn’t accepted into any Ivy League colleges, and Devi regrets not applying to any safety schools. After spending a night with Ben, she writes a supplemental essay for Princeton, finally coming to terms with her father’s death and its impact on her character.

The last episode of the series begins with Devi being accepted to Princeton, but her joy is short-lived as she learns that Ben is moving away for the summer to do an internship in New York. The montage of Sherman Oaks’ graduation is quickly over, and the last weekend of summer that follows connects to Devi packing for Princeton and attending her grandmother’s wedding. Emotional and nostalgic, Devi finds a placard from her Model UN days that reminds her of Ben, and she texts him wishing he was around for the wedding.

The wedding reception is a fitting farewell party for Devi and her friends, and it leads to heartfelt conversations between all of them, including Paxton and Devi, who come to the bittersweet realization that they are better off as friends. Devi finally packs for Princeton and has a vision of her father, who allows her to vocalize her fears about moving. This touching moment is interrupted by her mother, and they have one last heart-to-heart before finishing packing together and returning to the ceremony arm-in-arm. Devi and Kamala perform a Bollywood dance as a tribute to the South Asian community.

As the final scenes unfold, we see the characters moving on with their lives. Devi and Ben are officially together and giving a long-distance relationship a go, while her mom drinks wine with her partner and Fabiola thrives in a robotics class with her best friend Gears. Eleanor directs and acts in a movie with Trent on explosive effects, Paxton returns to Arizona State to study teaching, and Kamala and Manish enjoy ice cream.

In conclusion, the final season of Never Have I Ever provides a satisfying conclusion to the story, bringing a close to the trials and tribulations of the characters we’ve come to love.
