Will There Be Another ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Movie, and More Importantly, Should There Be?

With the conclusion of the third installment of the brilliant “Guardians of the Galaxy” franchise, it’s clear that any future films in the series wouldn’t be able to replicate the same magic. While the end-credits scene leaves room for the Guardians to continue their cosmic adventures and promises the return of Star-Lord, it’s time to consider leaving the Guardians alone.

What are the chances of getting a fourth film?

Being Disney, it’s evident that these movies are not just for entertainment but also a lucrative business. If a franchise brings in profits, the studio will undoubtedly push for more. And “Guardians of the Galaxy” has certainly been a money-making machine, with the first film raking in nearly $800 million worldwide and the subsequent movies surpassing the $800 million mark. Disney wouldn’t want to let go of these profitable heroes so easily.

However, while the last film provided a satisfying conclusion to the overall story, with each character completing their arcs and going their separate ways, the departure of key cast members like Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana, along with the departure of director James Gunn, marks the end of this particular iteration of the beloved Guardians. But that doesn’t mean the end for the Guardians as a whole, just this specific incarnation that we’ve grown to love.

We already know that a solo movie featuring Peter Quill/Star-Lord is in the works, as the end-credits scene promised us the return of “The Legendary Star-Lord.” Additionally, Rocket has a new team composed of Kraglin, King Groot, Adam Warlock, and Phyla, the young girl saved from the clutches of the High Evolutionary.

All of this indicates that Disney has plenty of material to expand upon based on what we witnessed in the third film. Although nothing is set in stone yet, it appears that the studio is simply biding its time with these characters. They will most likely grace the silver screen once again, but hopefully not under the title “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 4” as it would be a disservice to Gunn.

Why shouldn’t we get another Guardians?

Don’t get me wrong, I love the Guardians just as much as anyone else. But there comes a point when even a good thing can be overdone. Gunn did an exceptional job with these characters and their story across the three movies, and it feels like a complete trilogy. Why risk over-extending it and potentially diminishing its impact?

You might argue that other franchises like “Indiana Jones,” “Pirates of the Caribbean,” or “Transformers” continued with additional films. But in all honesty, those series worked best as trilogies. If “Indiana Jones” had ended at “The Last Crusade,” it would have left a better legacy. It’s okay to conclude things on a high note; Hollywood has conditioned us to believe that a franchise can’t die until it has suffered through a few awful sequels that flop at the box office. But that’s not necessarily true.

Moreover, the original line-up for the team was pretty much perfect. Fans went to theaters and bought tickets to see the characters they had grown to love over the past nine years. I know I did. Introducing a new line-up would come with high expectations and would need to fill some big shoes. While we all adore Rocket, it was the dynamic between him and the other Guardians that truly made him shine. Would he have the same chemistry with a new team?

No Guardians without Gunn

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, there can be no Guardians without Gunn. His unique style, dialogue, and set designs set these films apart from the typical Marvel content. While Marvel has many talented directors with great visions, Gunn’s cinematic flair is unparalleled and cannot be replicated.

Moreover, it seems that the directors and writers at Marvel are currently facing challenges. I wouldn’t trust Peyton Reed to direct a Guardians film or Jeff Loveness to write one. It’s not their fault; it’s just that the Marvel machine sometimes overwhelms and stifles creative individuals. Gunn managed to rise above it all. Now that he’s gone, it’s doubtful that anyone else can fill his shoes.

I firmly believe that any future Marvel offerings related to the Guardians of the Galaxy would only pale in comparison to the greatness of the original trilogy. Maybe I’m being pessimistic, but I think it’s time we recognize when to stop and appreciate what we were given.
