Why Ubisoft Supports Microsoft’s Acquisition of Activision

During an investor briefing by Ubisoft, CEO Yves Guillemot expressed his admiration for Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Guillemot saw the deal as a testament to the value of intellectual property (IP). Furthermore, he believed that Microsoft’s interest in Activision Blizzard’s mobile game business, particularly King and Candy Crush, served to validate Ubisoft’s own investments in the mobile market.

Guillemot stated, “The transaction going through is great news as it demonstrates the incredible power of IPs and the direction in which the industry is heading. It opens up numerous opportunities for all companies involved. Additionally, it highlights the value of IPs that can transcend platforms, including consoles, PCs, and mobile devices, ultimately becoming global brands. This presents a fantastic opportunity for Ubisoft. Microsoft’s acknowledgment of the importance of the mobile aspect in the Activision deal aligns perfectly with our own investments to strengthen our presence in the mobile space.”

Ubisoft has a lineup of exciting mobile games scheduled for release, including a new Assassin’s Creed game for Netflix called Assassin’s Creed Jade, Rainbow Six Mobile, and The Division: Resurgence.

While reports suggested that various companies were exploring the possibility of acquiring Ubisoft in 2022, no deal has materialized thus far, and the Guillemot family remains the company’s largest investor.

Regarding the Microsoft-Activision Blizzard deal, the companies have recently agreed to extend the deadline for the merger until October 2023. This extension was partly due to ongoing appeals processes in the UK and the need for Microsoft to strengthen its case. In the US, Microsoft and Activision achieved a partial victory in their legal battle with the FTC.
