Why ‘Rick and Morty’ Has Managed to Avoid Going Evil Once More

Rick and Morty has captivated audiences for over a decade with its thrilling escapades in a dangerous multiverse. While the animated comedy has excelled at delivering standalone episodes filled with laughter, it has also ventured into serialized storytelling. One standout character, Evil Morty, has garnered attention for his mission to eliminate Ricks across various realities, although his presence hasn’t been as prominent as anticipated.

In recent seasons of the popular Adult Swim series, the focus has shifted towards comedic episodes that seemingly lack character development in Rick and Morty. There seemed to be a promising storyline exploring Evil Morty’s origins and motivations for his plan, but the character’s absence from the main narrative was explained by Steve Levy, one of the show’s producers, in a recent interview with Premiere.

Dan Harmon, the co-creator of the series, drew inspiration from the sitcoms of the 70s and 80s, where each episode stood alone without a serialized story. This approach allowed shows to have longer lifespans. Harmon and the team decided against creating a heavily serialized series with a continuous storyline each week. The immense challenge of maintaining this format for ten seasons of Rick and Morty would result in episodes serving the story rather than being driven by creativity. The concept has always been to embark on different adventures with each episode.

However, the characters needed room to evolve, which led to the inclusion of occasional episodes centered around Evil Morty or Rick Prime. These episodes provide glimpses into the overarching story without revealing too much and keep viewers engaged. Season 7 promises exciting surprises.

Recently, Rick and Morty faced controversy when Justin Roiland, the voice actor for the main characters, was accused of abuse and domestic battery. The network swiftly cut ties with Roiland and announced plans to recast his roles in all future episodes. However, this change is not expected to delay the release of the upcoming seventh season, although an official premiere date has yet to be announced by Adult Swim.

Adult Swim’s Confidence in Their Flagship Show

It’s no secret that Rick and Morty has become one of Adult Swim’s most successful projects of the past decade, amassing a dedicated global fan base. After the third season’s conclusion in 2017, fans were left wondering about the show’s future as Adult Swim remained silent for months. In a groundbreaking move, the network ordered a whopping seventy additional episodes, a remarkable renewal not often seen in the industry. Unlike Netflix or Disney+, Adult Swim demonstrated unparalleled confidence in greenlighting seven more seasons of this beloved animated series.
