Hannibal, a show that aired from 2013 to 2015, was highly acclaimed during its run for its intricate plot, stunning visuals, and overall sophistication. Fans were shocked when the series was cancelled after Season 3. Since then, the show’s devoted fanbase has been hoping for a fourth season or even a revival series featuring the riveting story of Will Graham and Hannibal Lecter. In April, the series celebrated its 10th anniversary, only strengthening the push for another season.
In a January interview with Collider’s Christina Radish for Law & Order, Hugh Dancy, who played Will Graham on the show, discussed the calls for a fourth season and the possible reasons why it hasn’t happened yet. Dancy believes that the cost of making a season of television remains a major issue. Although streaming services were once seen as a saving grace for shows like Hannibal, funding cut-offs have led to the cancellation of popular shows after only one or two seasons.
The intense push-and-pull relationship between Dancy’s Will Graham and Mads Mikkelsen’s Hannibal Lecter made for captivating television. Hannibal Lecter, a cannibalistic forensic psychiatrist, becomes fascinated with the intelligent FBI profiler Will Graham who is capable of empathizing with serial killers. In a twisted attempt to connect with him, Hannibal Lecter manipulates Will into killing. Both Dancy and Mikkelsen delivered electrifying performances, making the TV show one of the best explorations of a popular fictional serial killer’s mind and life. Their performances were supported by a talented cast and excellent direction by Bryan Fuller and David Slade, among others.
Dancy also discussed the possibility of no longer being interested in playing the character or hoping for a fourth season. He believes the third season finale was conclusive but Fuller’s idea for a fourth season included an open-ended gap, suggesting that anything is possible.
On a lighter note, Dancy assures concerned fans that Will’s dogs from the show are doing well, adding that he believes Will would have prepared for a mechanism for them to go to a loving owner.
While fans may never get that fourth season, knowing Will’s dogs are taken care of may provide some comfort.
