Why an ‘iPhone Fold’ May Not Be Coming—Here’s the Reason

It is premature to make definitive statements about the future of foldable smartphones. However, the concept appears to be gaining traction and is likely here to stay in some form. Foldable phones are still a niche market within the smartphone industry, but more brands are beginning to embrace the idea or are considering doing so. Apple, for example, is known for taking its time and seems to be contemplating whether to pursue an iPhone Fold or explore alternative options.

Apple has previously filed patent applications related to foldable phones, but there are also indications that the company is considering rollable displays as an alternative. A recent patent application titled “Electronic Devices With Rollable Displays” suggests that Apple is indeed serious about exploring the potential of flexible displays.

The abstract of the patent application explains that the electronic device would feature a rollable display that can be moved between an unrolled state and a rolled state for storage. The display panel would contain a pixel array for producing images, and a transparent protective layer, possibly made of glass, would overlap the pixel array. The glass layer in the rollable portion of the display may be thinned to facilitate rolling, and the display would apply compressive stress to the glass layer when rolled up.

The patent application also acknowledges the need for a flexible display that can withstand rolling without sustaining damage. It suggests the use of a layer of glass attached to the front surface of the display panel as a protective measure, along with additional polymer layers or coatings to prevent scratches.

Furthermore, the patent application mentions the possibility of incorporating various sensors into the rollable display, including strain gauges, capacitive force sensors, resistive force sensors, and more. Apple is even exploring the potential for sensors capable of detecting three-dimensional non-contact gestures to enhance user interaction.

Overall, it appears that Apple is taking the idea of a rollable display seriously and is working towards developing a fully functional and durable panel. While there are still unresolved questions regarding the rollable mechanism, such as its susceptibility to damage and functional failure, the concept shows promise. Only time will tell how Apple plans to address these challenges.
