Why Actors Shouldn’t Be Concerned About Digital Replacements: Lessons from the Past

In a testament to his foresight, Samuel L. Jackson recently revealed that he had concerns about the use of AI and digital likenesses even 20 years ago during his time on Star Wars. He made sure to remove any clauses from his contracts that would allow his face to be used without his consent. This demonstrates Jackson’s commitment to protecting his image from being exploited.

There was a lot of controversy surrounding rumors that Bruce Willis had signed away the rights to his own face. With the rise of de-aging and deepfaking technology, many actors may be worried about the potential loss of job opportunities or the use of their likeness after their death.

However, actors can take comfort in the fact that when the film industry experimented with this technology twenty years ago in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, it was a major failure. The movie, which cost $137 million to produce, aimed to make the character Aki Ross, played by Ming-Na Wen, the world’s first digital actress who would be integrated into live-action projects. Unfortunately, the film performed poorly at the box office, resulting in a loss of $94 million and the closure of Square Pictures, the production company behind it.

Although technology has advanced since then, it is reassuring to know that the film industry has a track record of failure in this controversial field.
