Who Conceals their Identity as the Rogue Mage?

Editor’s note: **The Witcher Season 3: Spellbinding Twists and Cliffhangers**

Season 3 of The Witcher has finally arrived, and it’s divided into two parts for maximum suspense. Unlike previous seasons, this one puts more focus on the mages rather than the witchers. However, it still follows Geralt of Rivia as he navigates the challenges of protecting his adopted daughter, Ciri, from imminent danger.

With only five out of eight episodes released so far, the season has left fans on the edge of their seats. Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer are forced to stay hidden while multiple groups attempt to capture Ciri. However, their main target is Rience, a powerful fire mage with a mysterious benefactor. Political intrigue also emerges as Redania aims to use Ciri as a pawn, prompting scheming efforts from spymaster Dijkstra and sorceress Philippa Eilhart.

Episode 5, “The Art of Illusion,” takes viewers on a mind-bending journey as it plays with time. Set at the Aretuzan ball, where the Conclave of Mages begins, the episode showcases the same night from different perspectives, gradually revealing a surprising villain. The ball is eventful, featuring Redania’s plot to capture Ciri and the arrest of Stregobor. Geralt and Yennefer also reconcile their strained relationship. However, the biggest shock comes from the revelation that Stregobor isn’t the rogue mage hunting Ciri.

At the start of the party, Geralt and Yennefer set out to gather evidence against Stregobor, who they believe is connected to Rience and the recent disappearances of young girls. Their investigation leads them to suspect that Teryn, the lone survivor, has had her memories magically replaced with Ciri’s. They suspect Stregobor’s involvement due to his history of experimentations on young women.

Triss and Istredd also uncover evidence linking Stregobor to the disappearances, such as a stolen Book of Monoliths and the jewelry of missing girls. Together, the four of them expose Stregobor at the ball. However, Geralt and Yennefer realize that Stregobor is not the true culprit. They suspect Tissaia’s lover, Vilgefortz, a member of the Brotherhood, based on curious connections and strange conversations.

As Geralt sets out to find Vilgefortz, he is interrupted by Dijkstra, who holds him at sword-point. Dijkstra urges Geralt to choose a side in the forthcoming battle, but it may be too late for the White Wolf. Dijkstra and Philippa reveal their true intentions at the ball—to uncover the identity of a mage working for Nilfgaard and to manipulate Ciri’s claim on Cintra. Dijkstra’s sword at Geralt’s throat signifies that the stakes have risen.

Amidst the chaos, Geralt and Yennefer rekindle their romance. Despite their rocky past, Geralt confesses his love for Yennefer at the ball, and they share a passionate night together. However, their moment of happiness is short-lived as Vilgefortz’s guilt and the attack on Aretuza interrupt their reunion, leaving their future uncertain.

The final three episodes of The Witcher Season 3 will be released on July 29, promising to bring resolution to these gripping cliffhangers. With the confirmation of a fourth season, fans can expect even more thrilling twists and turns in the future.
