Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Succession Season 4 Episode 7.
Although Jesse Armstrong’s surprise announcement that season 4 of Succession would be its final may have been shocking, it has become clear that the Roy family saga has reached its conclusion. In the midst of contemplating the death of their father Logan (Brian Cox), Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Shiv (Sarah Snook) are also focused on saving the future of their empire while dealing with a Presidential election.
In the Succession universe, the Democrats’ Daniel Jiménez (Elliot Villar) will be facing the Republicans’ Jeryd Mencken (Justin Kirk), with Connor Roy (Alan Ruck) maintaining a 1% hold in the polls. The election outcome will undoubtedly impact the direction of major institutions like Waystar, ATN, and GoJo.
ATN is in a precarious position during the election; Lukas Matsson (Alexander Skarsgård) wants to dismantle Logan’s asset. However, Roman and Kendall refuse to give up the notoriously conservative station that is much like the Fox News network. Kendall’s daughter is harassed by racist Mencken supporters, and Shiv views Mencken as a fascist with social, economic, and American interventionist beliefs. It’s clear that the Roys don’t wish to back Mencken, as they strive to modernize ATN into a contemporary news outlet.
If Mencken wins with ATN’s support, it would be a fitting conclusion to the series as the Roy siblings become their father’s monsters and must support a candidate who horrifies them all.
Next week’s episode, “America Decides,” will presumably cover the night of the election and includes an appearance by Justin Kirk, one of the show’s most “delightfully wicked” co-stars.
Notably, Jiménez’s campaign has ruled out any negotiations with ATN, which Shiv learns from her former boyfriend Nate Sofrelli (Ashley Zukerman). There’s a possibility that Jiménez’s victory could lead to a violent fascist uprising, but what’s most surprising is Connor’s impact. Although he has no chance of winning, he has garnered support from some of Mencken’s targets and could end up making the most important decision in the family’s future.
