WhatsApp: WhatsApp may restore this Android, iPhone feature for desktop apps

WhatsApp has a slew of privacy features and one of them is ‘View Once’. This feature enables users to send photos and videos that disappear from the receivers’ WhatsApp chat after they have opened them once. The feature, which was removed a year ago, is said to be rolling out to some users now.
According to a report by WABetainfo, the removal of support for sending view once messages from desktop apps seemed unnecessary as it restricted users from sharing ‘View Once’ photos and videos.
“In the past few weeks, it appears that WhatsApp decided to bring back support for sending view once photos and videos to all their desktop apps!” the report said, adding that it’s rolling out to more people over the coming weeks.
WhatsApp restoring ‘View Once’ button
As WhatsApp is restoring the ability to send ‘view once’ messages, the button to set the image as a view once message is available within the caption bar in the drawing editor on WhatsApp for Windows.
WhatsApp also enabled support for sending view once messages from WhatsApp for macOS and linked devices in the past few weeks. It must be noted that, recently the ability to send ‘view once’ photos and videos was released on WhatsApp Web.
What is ‘view once’ messages feature
The ability to send the ‘view once messages’ from WhatsApp desktop apps will enable the users to send photos and videos which can be viewed only once. If a message is set to ‘view once’, media will not be saved to the recipient’s Photos or Gallery, and once a view once photo or video is sent, users won’t be able to view it again.
Photos or videos sent with ‘view once’ can’t be forwarded, saved, starred, or shared. The only thing the sender can know is that the recipient has opened a view once photo or video if the the read receipts is turned on.
“If you don’t open the photo or video within 14 days of it being sent, the media will expire from the chat. You must select the view once media each time you want to send a view once photo or video,” WhatsApp says.
‘View once’ media can be restored from backup if the message is unopened at the time of backup. If the photo or video has already been opened, the media will not be included in the backup and can’t be restored.
