WhatsApp Web Could Get the Ability to Create Usernames and Protect Your Privacy

Earlier this May, we reported how WhatsApp on Android and iOS might be getting a feature to let users select a username. The purpose was to ensure that users do not have to share their number with others; and instead, they can just look the person up with a username. Now, this feature has shown up on the web version, as well. Indicating that we might be getting closer to the release.

WhatsApp users can soon start creating their usernames to make things more secure and private

It is worth noting that the feature showed up on WhatsApp back in May, and it still has not hit the stable channel. Even though the feature is showing up in the web version of the service, it is still under development and is going to take some time before it finally hits the beta and stable channels. Regardless, it definitely is the right way to go because this feature will make people-search easy for everyone while also protect user privacy.

As you can see, you will soon be able to create a username for yourself on WhatsApp Web. Sure, this feature is something that is still under work, and it is going to take some time before it is available to everyone, but the good news is that once it does roll out, you will no longer have to worry about sharing your phone number when you can just give out your username and help people find you on WhatsApp using that.

I think this is one of the best steps that WhatsApp has taken in a long, long time. I just hope that the development of this feature is going smoothly and we can soon see it being available on all the platforms so people can start using it immediately. Rest assured, we will keep you posted once this feature is out of development and available for users to test out.
