What to Expect in Gaming in 2023: Diablo IV, Spider-Man 2 Release Date, Challenges with Microsoft’s Activision Takeover, and More

In the realm of gaming, 2023 has already proven to be an exceptional year. We’ve been treated to some highly anticipated titles that have exceeded expectations. First and foremost, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has taken us to new heights in the enchanting Sky Islands, where we’ve had the opportunity to utilize resources and create ingenious contraptions. Additionally, Hogwarts Legacy has captivated gamers, selling over 12 million copies within a mere two weeks of its release. This immersive game transports players to an ancient version of the iconic Hogwarts Castle, where they can delve into the world of witchcraft and wizardry.

The realm of remakes has also been thriving. Dead Space received a remarkable upgrade, while Resident Evil 4 experienced a slight mutation. And let’s not forget the highly anticipated sequel to the Final Fantasy VII Remake, slated for an early 2024 launch.

June is a pivotal month for gaming news, and even the cancellation of E3 hasn’t hindered the excitement. Publishers have seamlessly transitioned to online showcases, with Playstation and Xbox delivering some of the biggest presentations. Playstation treated us to 10 minutes of thrilling gameplay footage from Spider-Man 2, unveiling new villains such as the symbiote Venom and Kraven the Hunter. Although they didn’t announce a release date, they did reveal that the game will launch on October 20, with pre-orders opening on June 16. On the other hand, Xbox and Bethesda stole the show with their 45-minute presentation of Starfield, offering insights into exploration, character creation, and skills.

In the latest episode of Orbital, the renowned Gadgets 360 podcast, host Pranav Hegde engages in a fascinating conversation with industry insider Rishi Alwani and acclaimed games writer Rahul Chettiyar (that’s me) to discuss the future of gaming beyond 2023.

Now, let’s delve into some of the key highlights from the various gaming showcases. The PlayStation Showcase may have been considered lackluster by some, as it only announced two exclusive titles for the PS5: Spider-Man 2 and Final Fantasy XVI. However, others were pleased with the showcase, praising the polished quality of the games. It’s ironic that Microsoft is usually associated with pushing games-as-a-service titles, yet Sony showcased a plethora of live-service games. As for Xbox, they faced initial criticism with the underwhelming reception of Redfall, but they quickly bounced back with impressive single-player entries like Starfield and the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077.

The Ubisoft Forward Live event brought forth its own highlights, particularly The Division: Resurgence, an upcoming free-to-play mobile game that has garnered positive reviews from those who have had the chance to play it. Assassin’s Creed Mirage also piqued our interest, as Ubisoft is taking a back-to-the-roots approach with this installment, focusing on a tighter narrative set in 9th-century Baghdad.

We also discussed our thoughts on Diablo IV, addressing concerns such as the high price point and the potential impact of microtransactions. While the in-game shop currently operates in a non-intrusive manner, the introduction of an “intelligence system” in future updates raises questions about its effect on the game’s expansions and live-service content.

Finally, we explored the potential consequences of the Microsoft-Activision deal. While it may lead to cheaper access to games, there are concerns about the impact on consumer choice and game preservation. Gamers may find themselves limited to digital media without true ownership.

Looking ahead, there are plenty of exciting games to anticipate. Alwani highly anticipates Dragon’s Dogma 2 and The Division: Resurgence, recognizing the positive impact the latter will have on the mobile gaming industry in India. On a personal note, he takes pride in the global exposure of his game Indus through the release of trailers in London. As for me, I’m eagerly awaiting Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon, as it promises to provide a captivating experience set in a mech-dominated universe. Though I have concerns about how the complex controls will translate to the PC version, I’m confident that the game’s deep lore and intriguing narrative will make it a worthwhile venture.
