Warner Bros. Japan Condemns U.S. Counterpart’s ‘Inconsiderate’ Barbenheimer Tweets

Warner Bros. Japan has issued a strong statement denouncing the official U.S. Barbie X/Twitter account for their insensitive reactions to posts from Barbenheimer fans. The statement, shared on the Japanese Barbie movie account, has gained over 16 million views. According to Deadline, the translated message reads: “We deeply regret that the American headquarters of the Barbie movie reacted inappropriately to the social media posts made by Barbenheimer fans… We take this matter very seriously and urge the U.S. headquarters to take appropriate action. We extend our sincere apologies to those who were offended by these thoughtless reactions. Warner Bros Japan.”

A particular response from the U.S. Barbie movie Twitter account received mixed attention from Twitter users. In response to a fan-made Barbenheimer poster featuring Margot Robbie’s Barbie smiling alongside Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy, with a nuclear explosion in the background, the U.S. account commented, “It’s going to be a summer to remember,” followed by a kiss-blowing emoji and two hearts.

An outraged user retaliated with the same comment, but this time attaching pictures depicting the devastating aftermath of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.

Recently, the hashtag #NoBarbenheimer has gained popularity among users who are against the meme-ification of Barbie. The film, which explores themes of self-discovery and femininity, is set to release on the same day as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer, a biopic about the creator of the atomic bomb. As viral images connecting the beloved children’s toy to weapons of mass destruction continue to surface, users have criticized Barbie’s marketing team for seemingly endorsing insensitive jokes that trivialize a historic tragedy.

“The atomic mushroom cloud is a symbol of mass murder. Hundreds of thousands of lives were lost in the bombing raids in August 1945,” reads a translated comment from one user. “It’s disappointing to see Barbie’s official account responding positively to it.”

The Japanese release of the Barbie movie is scheduled for August 11, three weeks after the worldwide release of Oppenheimer on July 21. However, Universal, the distributor of Oppenheimer, has not confirmed or denied its plans for a release in Japan.

Warner Bros. U.S. has yet to respond to IGN’s request for comment.
