Viola Davis Refuses to Continue Work on ‘G20’ Despite SAG-AFTRA Waiver

The Big Picture

  • Viola Davis joins a growing list of A-list stars who have decided to not film during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, citing insensitivity.
  • Davis believes it is inappropriate for the production of G20 to continue while the strikes are ongoing, and she stands in solidarity with the actors and unions.
  • Despite interim agreements, actors face discomfort and uncertainty as they weigh the decision to accept work during the strikes and risk facing criticism.

Viola Davis may be the first in what will soon be a long list of A-list stars publicly backing away from filming a project for the duration of the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, despite receiving permission to continue shooting. The Oscar winner, who was working on G20, has decided to step back from production. According to a report from Deadline, Davis believes it would be insensitive to continue working.

The film was one of several projects to gain approval through a waiver, an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA that allows projects to start or continue production. However, Davis has released a statement explaining her decision to refrain from working until the strikes are resolved and all parties have signed an agreement to receive fair compensation for their past and future work.

“I love this movie, but I do not feel that it would be appropriate for this production to move forward during the strike,” said Davis, who won an Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for Fences in 2016. “I appreciate that the producers on the project agree with this decision. JuVee Productions and I stand in solidarity with actors, SAG/AFTRA, and the WGA.”

G20 is an action-packed thriller directed by Patricia Riggen, known for her work on The 33. The movie revolves around the G20 Summit, where a group of terrorists seizes control, leading to a gripping tale of suspense and danger. Davis portrays American President Taylor Sutton, a character who draws on her extensive statecraft and military background to protect her family, fellow leaders, and ultimately, the entire world.

The Moral Implications of Working Through a Strike

Despite receiving approval through interim agreements for movies and series, the topic has become frustrating for striking workers. This film, along with approximately 100 others, is operating under the terms of the interim agreement while companies like A24, which is not part of the AMPTP, the organization the screen actors are striking against, remain independent. Although A24 has not been granted specific permission, they have agreed to the contract terms, and actors who wish to work on their projects are still required to seek permission from the Screen Actors’ Guild.

The current situation highlights the discomfort and dilemma actors face during the strike as they contemplate whether to accept the circumstances they find themselves in. On one hand, agreeing to an interim agreement for a specific project could provide employment opportunities for hundreds of people during financially precarious times. However, making this choice might also subject them to criticism and accusations of “scabbing” due to the sensitive nature of the situation.
