Vaibhav Thakkar Talks Journey, Challenges, Dream Roles, and More

Vaibhav Thakkar has lent his voice to numerous characters, some of which you might still hear on our TV screens, across anime, animated shows, and live-action productions. These include the Hindi voices for Phineas Flynn from Phineas and Ferb, the iconic Kid Goku from Dragon Ball, Tyson from Beyblade, Taichi from Digimon Adventure:, Obocchama from Obocchama-kun, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and most recently, the irrepressible Luffy from Netflix’s One Piece live-action.

Thakkar spoke to IGN India at the AniMetro event that took place earlier this month in Odisha, about his journey in voice acting and more.

Talking about his experience working in various roles, Thakkar remarked that it has been really “special.” He said, “I feel really fortunate that I have got opportunities to dub characters which have such a massive reach. And to be honest, knowingly, or unknowingly you pick things from each one of them, and you get to grow as an artist and as a human.”

The challenges of live-action dubbing

Besides anime and animated dubs, Thakkar has also lent his voice to Hindi dubs of live-action shows and movies. “I really enjoy dubbing for live-action as there’s a very thin line for you to walk on which makes it challenging,” he explained. “You can end up sounding fake if you don’t meet the requirement. I focus on imbibing the soul of the character, expressions, and pitch while ensuring the essence resonates with the language I’m dubbing in, which, for me, is Hindi.”

Advice for aspiring voice actors

When asked about advice for aspiring voice actors, Thakkar encouraged dedication and learning from others. “Riyaaz karte raho (Keep practising),” he advised. “Get inspired by people who are doing good. I always say acting, and voice acting aren’t different at all apart from the technical differences. Pick things you feel that’ll enhance you as an artist from people around, and also discover things by yourself. Discover a new voice, discover different ways of delivering a dialogue so you don’t sound monotonous, focus on improving grasping power so that you can quickly imbibe the character traits while dubbing and deliver accordingly.”

His dream role

Talking about his dream roles, Thakkar said that he would like to voice Leonardo DiCaprio someday. “I love Leonardo DiCaprio as an actor, so I would love to voice him, but our age bracket is completely different, so my voice wouldn’t match his current personality. It can only happen if they are dubbing some of his old movies where he is my age. I’d be extremely happy if I get to dub his old movies!”

As for if there was any instance where he had to turn down a role, Thakkar revealed that it only happens when there’s not enough time. “Seldom it happens where you have to turn down a character,” he said. “It happens when the show requires a long commitment and your schedule is tight enough to incorporate that.”
