Utilizing Enzymes for Carbon Sequestration in the Battle Against Climate Change.

Klaus Skaalum Lassen is the Head of Carbon Capture and Storage at Novozymes, a company that is working with Saipem to optimize enzyme-based carbon capture. Due to the effects of climate change, there is a need for efficient carbon capture and storage (CCS) to reach carbon negative status by the latter half of this century. CCS currently captures only 4% of the necessary 1000 billion tons to meet climate targets by 2030. Enzymatic carbon capture, which uses an enzyme called carbonic anhydrase, is a more efficient, less expensive, and greener alternative to traditional solvent-based carbon capture. However, enzymatic carbon capture still faces challenges with scalability, and regulatory policies and infrastructure are needed to ensure successful carbon capture and storage.
