US government vs Google: How queries help make the search giant billions

It is a well-known fact that Google earns billions through advertising on Search. In Q3, Google earned $44 billion, which is an 11% jump year-over-year, from the Search business. But little do people know how this works. During the US government vs Google antitrust case, it was revealed what type searches help the company rake in billions every year.
Google says that it only shows ads on about 20% of queries, which it calls “commercial queries.” In layman’s terms, this means that any query that has some sort of finances associated with it helps Google make money.
For example, when you search for “prime minister of India”, you won’t see any ads because it’s just the information you seek. But if you search for “Taj Mahal” or “when was Taj Mahal built”, you will see ads of booking options from different websites. Search for “best places to visit in agra”, the advertising becomes more sophisticated with prominent links and “sponsored” posts. Here’s where the money comes from.
Two types of advertising
There are two types of advertising. First, businesses can reach potential customers by showing ads on a range of Google products such as Search or YouTube. The other one allows businesses to buy ad space that we show on sites and apps that partner with Google.
These include news publications and blogs. “In this case, most of the money goes to the partner and helps fund their content,” Google says.
For example, if you have searched for a trip to Agra on Search, you will see ads and sponsored links on the search page. You may also see ads related to Agra on websites that you may visit after searching for Agra trips.
Top Google queries in 2018
During the trial, Google also revealed the top 20 queries for the week of September 22, 2018, ordered by revenue:

car insurance quotes

online colleges

During that time, Apple had launched the iPhone and when people search for “iPhone 8”, “iPhone 8 Plus” or “iPhone”, people must have seen ads from a lot of retailers, carriers and accessory makers. We searched “iPhone 15”, and saw sponsored links from Vijay Sales, Croma, Apple, Flipkart, Amazon and Reliance Digital.
Similarly, searches for insurance-related queries, cheap flights and others also help Google make money.
Searches like “Apple”, “Samsung” are likely to return the official websites, sometimes with a “sponsored” tag. This means that these companies have invested heavily in keeping their website on the top of the search results.
Google also makes money by “cost per click” method. This means that the advertiser pays the amount when someone clicks on their link. For example, “iPhone 15 on Amazon” is a specific query wherein users are likely to click or even buy from the website via Google. In such cases, the cost is higher.
