The United States has joined other countries in implementing restrictions on the use of generative AI-powered chatbots for work purposes. The US House of Representatives has established a set of rules governing the utilization of the popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, developed by Microsoft-backed OpenAI.
In a notice to House staffers, Catherine L. Szpindor, the chief administrative officer, specified that offices may only use the ChatGPT Plus version of the product. This particular version, available as a monthly subscription from OpenAI for $20, includes essential privacy features designed to safeguard House data.
The notice outlined certain restrictions on the use of ChatGPT. House offices are not permitted to integrate the chatbot into their regular workflow. Additionally, staff members are prohibited from using ChatGPT with sensitive data that has not already been made public. The notice emphasized the importance of enabling privacy settings from the “Settings” menu to ensure that interactions are not saved or incorporated into the language model, as these settings are disabled by default.
On the other hand, the notice also mentioned that ChatGPT can be used for research and evaluation purposes only. House offices are encouraged to experiment with the tool to explore its potential usefulness in congressional operations.
This development comes shortly after Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer called for new legislation to regulate the AI industry. Schumer highlighted AI as a potential catalyst for technological advancement, scientific discovery, and industrial progress. However, he emphasized the need for innovation to be conducted safely to avoid hindering AI’s development and progress.
In line with these concerns, other tech giants such as Apple and Samsung have restricted the use of similar tools like ChatGPT due to fears of potential data leaks.
