Understanding Skin Float in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is not just a popular multiplayer shooter, but also a thriving trading scene for skins and skin cases. Whether you’re interested in becoming a skin trader or simply want to buy your favorite skin, it’s important to familiarize yourself with some key terms.

If you’ve ventured into the CS:GO skin-selling scene, you’ve probably come across terms like “skin’s float” or “wear rate.” If you’re unsure about the meaning of these terms, you’re in the right place.

What Is Skin Float?

Skin float is a numerical value assigned to each weapon skin in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, indicating its wear rate. When you use a skin in the game, its float number increases. As the wear rate rises, the skin loses its initial shine and may even lose color. Consequently, skins with lower float numbers are more valuable than those with higher float numbers.

In Counter-Strike, the wear rate is categorized into five stages, with each stage diminishing the skin’s visual appeal. The float number range for each wear status is as follows:

  • Factory New
    • Float range: 0.0 0.07
    • This is the best condition for any skin, with a shiny and vibrant appearance.
  • Minimal Wear
    • Float range: 0.07 – 0.15
    • Slightly less pristine than Factory New, but still in excellent condition with no visible color fading.
  • Field-Tested
    • Float range: 0.15 – 0.38
    • Some fading of the skin’s color begins to occur in this stage.
  • Well-Worn
    • Float range: 0.38 – 0.45
    • The skin’s color fades further, and the main pattern loses its vibrancy.
  • Battle-Scarred
    • Float range: 0.45 – 1.0
    • This is the worst condition for a skin, but it is often the most affordable option.

To view the float number of your skins, navigate to the “inventory” tab in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. Select a skin and choose to “inspect” it. Hover your mouse over the “info” icon at the bottom left of the screen, and a new window will appear displaying the skin’s float number under the “Wear Rating” parameter.

If you’re purchasing skins from the Community Market, hovering your mouse over the skin’s icon will also reveal its wear state based on the key terms mentioned above. Remember, the more you use a skin, the higher its float number will become. So, if you own a Factory New skin and intend to trade it, avoid using it in the game to maintain its value.
