Uncharted had its debut last year, and while it didn’t achieve monumental success, it also didn’t turn out to be a complete disaster. The film made a respectable $120 million at the domestic box office and $400 million worldwide. While these numbers may not break records, they are still encouraging for a potential sequel.
However, the release date for the sequel remains uncertain. Tom Holland, who starred as Nathan Drake in the first film, seems to be shifting away from major action roles for the foreseeable future. Additionally, Holland didn’t appear to thoroughly enjoy his time playing Drake, which may affect his decision to commit to another big-budget adventure. It’s also reasonable to assume that Holland will prioritize another Spider-Man movie if given the opportunity.
Although producer Charles Roben confirms that there are plans for a sequel in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he doesn’t seem to be in a rush to start production.
“We had a great time making that movie. The audience, including those unfamiliar with the game, responded positively. So, we are definitely interested in making another one.”
Roben’s response is somewhat vague, but fortunately, if the project does move forward, the game series developed by Naughty Dog can serve as a rich source of inspiration for action-packed scenes. Even if Holland chooses not to return, there is the option of adapting Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which focuses on the adventures of Chloe Frazer and Elena Fisher. We’ve already been introduced to the live-action version of Chloe through Sophia Ali’s portrayal, and she expresses enthusiasm for her character to venture on her own.
We can only hope that the gears start turning soon for this sequel. While Uncharted may not have been the greatest blockbuster of all time, there is certainly room for improvement in the sequel.
