Despite the industry strikes that nuked any chance of a promotional offensive through press interviews and premieres, the odds may seem increasingly stacked against Blue Beetle. However, star Xolo Maridueña remains confident as ever.
To hype up his DCU debut without breaking the rules, the actor paid tribute to the cast, crew, and Blue Beetle Battalion in a recent social media post. Social media users took matters into their own hands to prevent this from becoming the franchise’s third colossal commercial catastrophe of the year.
Whether or not this occurs is debatable, but James Gunn has confirmed that Maridueña is part of his plans for the future of the DCU. Taking it a step further, the Cobra Kai veteran referred to himself as the superhero sandbox’s “ultimate key” in an interview with Total Film, emphasizing Jaime Reyes’ ability to fit in anywhere.
“In this movie, he feels like an adult, but put him next to a Batman or a Superman and he’s definitely a kid. So I think there is an opportunity, not only within the Blue Beetle universe but within the rest of the plans, to add him in.”
If Gunn holds up his end of the bargain, Maridueña’s wish may come true. The smart money would be on Blue Beetle eventually crossing paths with both the Dark Knight and Man of Steel whenever the DCU does its first major crossover. This is a contractual obligation for any comic book IP.
