‘Ugly Betty’ Is Finally Coming to Netflix

The Big Picture

  • Netflix is adding “Ugly Betty” to its catalog, with all four seasons available starting August 1.
  • “Ugly Betty” addressed important issues like beauty standards, privilege, and immigration.
  • The series featured LGBTQIA+ representation and guest appearances from superstars like Naomi Campbell, Adele, Shakira, and Vera Wang.

If you’re tired of Barbie and craving some America Ferrera, Netflix has exciting news for you. The streaming platform has announced the debut of “Ugly Betty” on its catalog. And here’s the best part: You can grab your killer poncho and get ready to binge-watch because all four seasons will be available starting August 1!

“Ugly Betty” tells the story of Betty Suarez (Ferrera), a young girl who lands a job as a secretary at one of the most influential fashion magazines in the world, Mode. Despite facing constant bullying from her colleagues due to not fitting the stereotypical model type, Betty slowly wins people over with her kindness and relentless optimism. The series also stars Broadway legend Vanessa Williams as Mode’s creative director Wilhelmina Slater, Eric Mabius as heir to the Mode empire Daniel Meade, Michael Urie as Wilhelmina’s devoted assistant Marc, and Becki Newton as Mode’s fearless receptionist Amanda. Anna Ortiz, Tony Plana, and Mark Indelicato play Betty’s family members Hilda, Ignacio, and Justin, respectively.

The series ran for four seasons on ABC and gained popularity after an impressive debut season that skillfully balanced a critique of unrealistic beauty standards, privilege, and immigration with telenovela elements and a touch of “The Devil Wears Prada” vibes. “Ugly Betty” was also known for its inclusive LGBTQIA+ representation, breaking new ground in 2006. However, it received criticism for its representation of transgender characters, with cis woman Rebecca Romijn playing a trans woman.

Throughout its run, “Ugly Betty” received nominations in various award categories, including the Emmys for legendary costume designer Patricia Field. The show also featured cameos and guest roles from superstars like Naomi Campbell, Adele, Shakira, Vera Wang, Victoria Beckham, Brooklyn Decker, and even Gene Simmons. It also welcomed guest actors such as Patti LuPone, Octavia Spencer, Kathy Najimi, Kristin Chenoweth, and the late Betty White.

“Ugly Betty” was developed for American television by the late Silvio Horta, who drew inspiration from the immensely successful Colombian telenovela “Yo Soy Betty La Fea.” The Colombian version ran for 335 episodes and was adapted in over a dozen countries, including Mexico, South Africa, Turkey, India, Poland, China, and Brazil.

All seasons of “Ugly Betty” will be available on Netflix starting August 1. You can revisit the series’ very first scene below:
