Ubisoft CEO Expresses Optimism Over the Impending Closing of Activision Blizzard Deal

The Microsoft/Activision Blizzard merger is quickly progressing towards completion. Recently, the US Supreme Court denied a group of gamers’ request for an emergency injunction to block the deal. This wasn’t surprising, especially after the Federal Trade Commission’s previous rejection.

While Microsoft is still finalizing its deal proposal to submit to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CEO Sarah Cardell mentioned that the regulator is awaiting this), the $68.7 billion merger is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, thanks to the extension agreement signed by Activision Blizzard.

Interestingly, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot shared his thoughts on the news during a recent investors call. He believes it’s good news because it aligns with the increasing significance of owning valuable intellectual properties (IPs) and expanding their presence in the mobile gaming industry, an approach Ubisoft is currently pursuing.

Guillemot stated, “The transaction going through demonstrates the power of IPs and where the industry is heading. This opens up numerous opportunities for companies in the future. It also emphasizes the value of IPs that can now be found on PC, console, and mobile platforms, becoming global brands. This presents a fantastic opportunity. Microsoft’s emphasis on the mobile aspect of the Activision Blizzard deal aligns with our investments to strengthen our position in the mobile sector. All these factors will contribute to the company’s growth.”

It’s worth noting that Guillemot isn’t the only CEO from a major third-party publisher who has expressed optimism about the Microsoft/Activision Blizzard merger. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two, also shared similar sentiments shortly after the deal was announced in early 2022.

On a different note, Ubisoft is currently working on several projects, including Rainbow Six Mobile, Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence, and Assassin’s Creed Jade. Beta tests have recently been conducted for the first two games, while Jade, which will be published by Tencent’s label Level Infinite, is scheduled to have a closed beta from August 3rd to August 11th.

In other Ubisoft news, executives have expressed confidence in the development of Skull and Bones ahead of the upcoming beta, which is set to begin on August 25th. However, the game still does not have a confirmed release date.
