Two of Reddit’s largest communities are exclusively dedicated to sharing John Oliver posts

The two popular subreddits, r/pics and r/gifs, have recently made a significant change. Now, they only permit posts related to the renowned comedian and host of “Last Week Tonight,” John Oliver. This decision comes after the subreddits went dark as part of the ongoing protests aimed at Reddit. Following polls conducted within each subreddit, the new rules have been implemented.

The r/gifs moderator, u/IronSentinel, explains that the poll was initiated in response to statements made by Reddit’s CEO. The CEO suggested that the desires of everyday users were being overshadowed by those of the moderators. Thousands of subreddit moderators had set their communities to private to protest upcoming API changes that would lead to the shutdown of beloved third-party apps. However, the CEO, Steve Huffman, argued that not all users supported the protests.

In an interview with NBC News, Huffman compared unpaid volunteer moderators to the “landed gentry,” a comparison that angered the moderators of r/pics. One of the moderators, u/pics-moderator, expressed the subreddit’s commitment to comply with the members’ wishes while addressing the frustrations caused by the CEO’s comments. To determine the future direction, the r/pics subreddit asked its users for input.

Both r/pics (with over 30 million subscribers) and r/gifs (with over 21 million subscribers) offered users two options to vote on: returning the subreddit to its regular content or only allowing pictures or GIFs related to John Oliver. The results were clear, but there has been no immediate response from a spokesperson for “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver.”

While some subreddits remain dark, according to a tracker, many have reopened in recent days. Reddit has contacted some moderators offering assistance in processing Top Mod Removal requests to overcome any hindrances to reopening. Some subreddits, like r/Apple, reopened due to fears of being forcibly reopened by Reddit.

Concerns over Reddit’s behavior and threats have been expressed by moderators in a post on r/ModCoord. The volunteers who moderate Reddit’s communities view themselves as vital to the platform’s success and call on Reddit to listen to their concerns and collaborate with them to maintain the vibrant communities that define Reddit. Until their demands are met, the blackouts will continue without fear of any consequences. This post has received support from over 170 users.
