Twitter’s New Initiative: Creators Now Earn a Share of Ad Revenue

Twitter has recently launched its ad-revenue-sharing program for creators, and eligible Blue subscribers are already receiving payments. This initiative was initially announced by Elon Musk in February, but at the time, there were very few details available about how it would work.

According to a tweet announcing the program, eligible creators will receive a portion of the ad revenue generated from their posts, starting with replies. Several high-profile users have reported receiving notifications about incoming deposits, ranging from a few thousand to ten thousand dollars. These rewards are based on ads shown in replies to eligible users’ content.

The first round of payouts for creators will amount to $5 million, as confirmed by Musk, and will be cumulative from February onwards.

So, what are the criteria for revenue sharing on Twitter? According to the support post, the revenue-sharing system is only available for Twitter Blue or Verified Organizations subscribers who have generated at least five million post impressions in each of the past three months. Additionally, users will be subjected to a human review and must follow the Creator Subscriptions policies before getting paid through a Stripe account. Those who meet the requirements can apply for the program by going to the Monetization section in their account settings, and Twitter plans to expand eligibility to more creators in the future.

There are certain limitations on which creators can earn money through Twitter’s content monetization program. Monetizing sexual content is not allowed, in accordance with Twitter’s standards. Content related to pyramid schemes, get-rich-quick schemes, violence, criminal activities, gambling, drugs, and alcohol is also prohibited from monetization. Furthermore, attempting to monetize copyrighted content that the creator does not own is considered a violation.

These payouts come at a challenging time for Twitter, as the platform is facing various challenges, including a lawsuit for 500 million unpaid severance checks and competition from Zuckerberg-owned Meta, who is trying to impact Twitter’s declining traffic.
