Twitter has undergone a rebranding, now known as X after being acquired by owner Elon Musk. According to Musk, the social media platform has reached “new heights” with over 540 million monthly users, a significant increase from the reported 229 million active users in May 2022. Since taking over the site in November 2022, Musk has made several changes, including staff layoffs and the appointment of Linda Yaccarino as CEO. Despite these changes, Twitter continues to struggle with its advertisement revenue.
As part of the rebranding, the mobile application icons for Twitter on both Android and iOS platforms have been changed to ‘X’. Additionally, user-generated content, previously known as tweets, is now referred to as posts. While the Twitter 10.1.0-beta.1 version appears as ‘X Beta’ on some Android devices, the apk file is still labeled as com.twitter.android. On Apple’s iOS devices, the update reflects the new logo but retains the old name.
Musk’s rebranding efforts may face legal obstacles, as the letter X is widely used and could potentially lead to conflicts over trademark rights. Meta Platforms, the parent company of rival social media platform Facebook, holds a federal trademark for a blue-and-white letter “X” in software and social media fields. Microsoft also has an X trademark related to communications about its Xbox video game system. However, experts believe legal action is unlikely unless these companies feel that Twitter’s X encroaches on their established brand equity. Interestingly, Meta faced legal challenges when it changed its name from Facebook to Meta, including a dispute over its infinity-symbol logo.
