Twitter bans more than 1.1 million Indian accounts – Discover the reason

Elon Musk’s Twitter has taken strong action against policy violations in India, banning a total of 1,132,228 accounts between April 26 and May 25. These bans were imposed due to violations related to child exploitation and terrorism. The majority of the accounts were banned for abuse/harassment (264), followed by hateful conduct (84), sensitive adult content (67), and defamation (51). Additionally, Twitter also removed 1,843 accounts promoting terrorism in the country.

In their monthly report, the social media company revealed that they received 518 complaints from Indian users during the April-May period. After reviewing the specifics of each situation, 25 account suspensions were overturned, but the remaining reported accounts still remain suspended.

These actions align with the new IT Rules 2021, which require major digital and social media platforms with over 5 million users to publish monthly compliance reports.

Twitter also shared that they received 29 requests related to general questions about Twitter accounts during this reporting period. They processed 90 grievances from users appealing account suspensions.

The recent development of Twitter walling accounts has caused some controversy. Users now need to log in to access tweets on the platform. Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney criticized this move, stating that web browsing now feels horrible due to various paywalls and restrictions on different platforms.

Elon Musk responded to Sweeney’s tweet, acknowledging the issue of aggressive Twitter data scraping by several organizations. He expressed openness to ideas on how to stop this behavior and stated that Twitter will take legal action against those who stole their data.

Overall, Twitter’s efforts to enforce policy regulations and protect user experiences in India are evident through these account bans and their commitment to addressing user grievances.
