The Move deck, a core deck archetype in Marvel Snap, has long been in need of new tools, leaving it near the bottom and mid-tier ranks. However, that could all change with the next season, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse tie-in, called Spider-Versus. This season will focus on movement-based abilities, to match the wallcrawler’s legendary agility. This could shake up the meta in ways not seen since the game launched.
Move decks are some of the earliest archetypes players gain in Marvel Snap, earning most of the major tools while still at a relatively low rank. They work as a learning tool for beginners, since Snap is a zone-control game at its heart, where movement-based abilities help illustrate the core mechanics and give new players their first taste of a tricky strategy that can make good use of bluffs. Experienced Move deck players not only understand when to play Heimdall as their big finisher, but also when not to play the card, allowing their opponent to overcommit to a location that isn’t really being contested.
However, movement-based decks have not remained viable for high-level play. Developer Second Dinner has been incredibly scarce with adding new movement-based cards, and this has primarily been because of the obvious strength of movement-based abilities for a zone-control game. The very first season pass introduced Miles Morales as a decent enough Move staple, while Jeff, the shark introduced to counter Spider-Man and Professor X strategies, has not seen much play in movement-based decks.
The upcoming Spider-Versus season looks to change all of that. The new season adds a bevy of movement-based cards that complement Move abilities. Ghost Spider, the season pass card, can thwip the last card played to its location, which is perfect for activating movement-based cards like Human Torch or Vulture, bailing a card out of a losing position, or bluffing the opponent. Silk darts around the battlefield whenever any card is played at her location, and Spider-Man 2099 destroys a card when moved to a new location, effectively targeting a big enemy minion that seems to have a location locked down. Both of the new locations coming this season also benefit Move abilities. Aunt May’s grants a power buff and then moves the card somewhere else, and Great Web moves one card for each player to it at the end of each turn.
All of the new tools have high-level players speculating about the prevalence of movement-based decks this season. Some have started speculating how to counter move decks, using cards like Kingpin or Professor X to punish or prevent movement. The effectiveness of other decks in adapting and countering the new tools will determine how powerful movement-based decks will become in the next season, and whether they will remain viable in the long term. However, for the time being, it seems that the beginner-friendly archetype might finally get some high-level play.
Marvel Snap’s Spider-Versus season begins on June 5 at 8 PM PT/11 PM ET.
