Trailer for The Last of Us Episode 5: Kansas City Ruins Ravaged by a Terrifying Bloater

The eagerly awaited trailer for episode 5 of The Last of Us has finally arrived. HBO has once again provided a sneak peek into the next installment of the post-apocalyptic zombie drama, based on the popular Playstation video game. This time, viewers are treated to a glimpse of the terrifying Bloater, the fourth and final stage of the infected, which has evolved after years of exposure to the Cordyceps fungi. The upcoming episode, titled ‘Endure and Survive,’ is directed by Jeremy Webb (known for his work on The Umbrella Academy) and will be released two days early on HBO Max and HBO On Demand in the US, avoiding a clash with the Super Bowl LVII event on February 12. The episode will be available on these services at 9am ET on February 10, while the linear telecast on HBO cable will follow the usual Sunday schedule. We have reached out to Disney+ Hotstar to confirm if the early release will apply to India as well.

The trailer for episode 5 picks up where we left off, with Joel (played by Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) finding themselves at gunpoint in the ruins of Kansas City. The hostile individuals are Henry (played by Lamar Johnson) and his deaf younger brother Sam (played by Keivonn Montreal Woodard), who are hiding from a group of hunters led by a new character named Kathleen (played by Melanie Lynskey). Kathleen claims that Kansas City is now free under her revolutionary movement, and we see her followers engaged in a manhunt. The show seems to be deviating from the video game by giving these antagonists some character development before the eventual showdown. It is unclear why Kathleen is hunting Henry, but it is hinted that he may be connected to her brother’s death.

As our lead pair teams up with Sam and Henry to fight against the hunters, it becomes evident that the infected are not the only threat they face. The hunters, who have overthrown the military rule in their quarantine zone, are creating chaos and attracting even more infected to the city. The trailer shows Ellie still holding onto the gun she acquired from Bill and Frank, which she previously used to save Joel’s life. This indicates that Joel now trusts her with the weapon.

The trailer also features intense action sequences, including a terrifying encounter with the highly mutated Bloater, prompting Joel to order Ellie to escape the area. It also teases the final confrontation between Kathleen and Henry, with Kathleen ominously stating, “It ends the way it ends.” HBO has already renewed the show for a second season, which will delve into the events of The Last of Us Part II game, suggesting that the story is expansive and will span beyond a single season.

New episodes of The Last of Us are available for streaming every Monday on Disney+ Hotstar in India. As of now, there is no confirmation whether episode 5 will be released early on Saturday in the country, similar to the US release. We will update this article once we hear back from Hotstar.
