Total War Warhammer 3 DLC faces backlash over high asking price

Total War Warhammer 3 DLC Shadows of Change has ignited a debate within the game’s community, with players, YouTubers, and a former Warhammer producer at Games Workshop sharing their opinions on the expansion’s price. The DLC introduces three new lords to the expansive strategy game and its epic Immortal Empires campaign mode, but the cost of the Total War Warhammer 3 update is causing concern for many.

The release date for Total War Warhammer 3 Shadows of Change is August 31, 2023, and it is priced at $24.99 / £19.99. However, it is currently on sale for 10% off until September 7 as a launch promotion. This puts it at approximately 40% of the price of the base game. While it matches the cost of the recent Chaos Dwarfs DLC, which introduces a completely new race and offers more content, our Total War Warhammer 3 Chaos Dwarfs review highlights the difference in value.

Comparatively, previous packs like Champions of Chaos added four playable lords and were priced at $15.99 / £12.99. In the previous two games of the series, lord packs usually included two paid lords (priced at $8.99 / £6.99 for the first game and $9.99 / £7.99 for the second), with a third lord available as free downloadable content alongside each major release.

This change in pricing has sparked intense discussions on the game’s Discord and Reddit platforms. Several highly upvoted threads from this week directly address the topic, while others make humorous remarks about the situation. One commenter points out that the Total War Warhammer 2 packs did include three lords, although one was offered as free content. They state, “Additional content in Shadows of Change, compared to WH2, is only a few more units. It doesn’t justify the price increase.”

Another user expresses, “I have no problem buying a $30 DLC if it offers $30 worth of content. The content in this DLC can’t be priced more than $15.99 at max.” While discussions about value are subjective, it is evident why players are hesitant to accept the significant price hike for this latest bundle without a clear explanation.

Renowned Total War Warhammer 3 YouTuber ‘Loremaster of Sotek’ joins the discussion, tweeting, “What in God’s name is that Shadows of Change price.” As one of the community’s most influential figures with over 70,000 subscribers on his Warhammer Fantasy channel, he expresses concerns in a video, stating, “I’m a bit worried about the exorbitant price for the DLC, not to mention a few lacking aspects.”

Another prominent Total War YouTube creator known as ‘milkandcookestw’ shares their perspective. In a video discussing the controversy, they state, “We’re currently looking at a 150% price increase for maybe a 30-50% increase in content compared to previous lord packs. This can be considered a generous estimate.” They further comment, “Considering previous launches, the value proposition for the price just isn’t justified.”

They also mention that upon learning about the price point, they sent the following message to developer Creative Assembly: “I’m not familiar with CA’s cost of production or supply chain, but I can certainly assess a DLC and say, ‘Hmm, that price doesn’t seem to align with the content displayed.’ And in this case, I don’t think $25 is justifiable for Shadows of Change, despite its enjoyable aspects.”

The price of the DLC is proving difficult to accept even for those closely connected to the franchise. Andy Law, former designer and producer for the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay tabletop RPG, dedicated an hour-long YouTube livestream to discuss his thoughts on the DLC. Alongside his work on the core rulesets, Law was involved in creating the hags for WFRP 2nd edition, so he takes a particular interest in the arrival of Mother Ostankya.

Law expresses his admiration for the Total War implementation of the hags of Kislev, highlighting the inclusion of Mother Ostankya’s “unique melee component” and her use of ingredients to harness power from spirits, which can be utilized for blessings or curses. However, when it comes to the DLC’s price, he hesitates.

“I won’t share my opinion on the price of the DLC because I’m planning to purchase it myself, and I’m already flinching at the price,” he remarks. “I carefully examined what you get for your money, and while I love every aspect of the content being added, I can’t say I appreciate the price they expect me to pay for it.”

It appears that the Total War Warhammer 3 community is largely unified in their viewpoint on this matter. Most players seem satisfied with the offered content – the inclusion of Grand Cathay and Tzeentch receiving more attention has generated excitement. Personally, I am particularly intrigued by the Changeling’s shapeshifting abilities. However, it remains to be seen if players are willing to pay the newfound asking price set by Creative Assembly.
