David Tennant, everyone’s beloved Time Lord, is making a long-awaited return to Doctor Who. The actor, known for his previous portrayal of the iconic character, can be seen in his new iteration on the cover of Doctor Who Magazine and in a recently released poster by the BBC. The mystery surrounding Tennant’s return lies in the question of why he has chosen to revisit his previous face after having lived multiple lives since his last appearance as the Doctor. True to the nature of the show, nothing is ever straightforward in the adventures of the Time Lord.
But Tennant won’t be alone in his return to the TARDIS. Catherine Tate will also be making a comeback to Doctor Who after over a decade away from the program. Tate’s character, Donna Noble, was one of the Doctor’s many companions, traveling with him to various planets and encountering historical figures. However, her fate was a heartbreaking one, as she was forced to forget her time with the Doctor in order to protect her brain from irreversible damage or death.
Both Tennant and Tate’s return is a part of the special 60th Anniversary episodes, set to air on the BBC and on Disney+ later this year. While the plot remains a secret, the inclusion of such iconic actors from the show’s history suggests that the upcoming story will be emotionally charged.
The Doctor and Donna will reunite briefly before the show dives into a new era of adventures. The next Doctor, portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa, will be introduced following Tennant’s return. Gatwa, known for his role in Sex Education, will have the opportunity to pilot the TARDIS and interact with a new set of companions in his debut season. With production recently wrapped, there are high chances of Gatwa’s first season premiering next year.
With Jodie Whittaker’s time as the Doctor coming to an end, a regeneration will once again infuse the classic series with fresh energy as it journeys into the future of time travel.
