These ‘Good Omens’ Season 2 Stars Have a Surprise Connection to David Tennant

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for Season 2 of Good Omens.

Season 2 of Good Omens takes a closer look at the dynamic between Aziraphale and Crowley through four minisodes. Peter Davison, famous for his role as the Fifth Doctor in Doctor Who, portrays Job in these minisodes. Ty Tennant, who plays Ennon, has also appeared in House of the Dragon and acted alongside his father and grandfather in other projects. Fans of David Tennant were pleasantly surprised when they saw him in Episode 2 of Season 2. Alongside the overarching plot of Archangel Gabriel’s amnesia on Earth, this new season explores the relationship between the angel Aziraphale and the demon Crowley. These minisodes, intertwined with the main storyline as flashbacks, begin in Episode 2. Crowley and Aziraphale’s investigation into Gabriel’s whereabouts leads them to the biblical story of Job. It is during this journey that the audience encounters familiar faces with strong connections to David Tennant.

Peter Davison and Ty Tennant, who play Job and his son Ennon, are related to David Tennant offscreen. Davison is David Tennant’s father-in-law, as he is the father of actress Georgia Moffett, David’s wife. Ty, on the other hand, is Georgia’s son, whom David adopted. However, their roles in Good Omens are not simply a case of favoritism but are rooted in their established careers as performers in popular TV series. Let’s dive into their respective backgrounds.

The story of Job revolves around a man whose soul becomes the subject of competition between Heaven and Hell. God favored Job, a faithful believer, until Satan persuaded God to test him by taking away everything Job had, including his family and possessions. If Job remained faithful, he would be rewarded twofold. However, the return of his children would come in the form of new children, not a resurrection of the deceased ones. This dark and twisted biblical tale serves as a perfect backdrop for the exploration of good and evil in Good Omens.

In the minisode titled “A Companion to Owls,” Crowley transforms Job’s three children into newts to protect them. Aziraphale then tricks the Archangels by exploiting Gabriel’s ignorance of human childbirth, convincing them that the larger-than-usual babies are different children. Peter Davison takes on the role of Job in this haunting story. Davison is renowned for his portrayal of the Fifth Doctor in Doctor Who. His tenure on the show spanned from 1982 to 1984, succeeding Tom Baker and being succeeded by Colin Baker.

Interestingly, Davison’s connection to Doctor Who is not the sole reason for his casting as Job. Neil Gaiman, the creator of Good Omens, revealed that he invited Davison to guest star due to his admiration for Davison’s work in the 1978 BBC comedy series All Creatures Great and Small.

Ty Tennant, on the other hand, had to audition for the role of Ennon, Job’s ill-mannered son. Prior to his involvement with Good Omens, Tennant portrayed the young version of Aegon Targaryen, a cruel king, in HBO’s House of the Dragon. He also had a role in the Doom Patrol episode “Dead Patrol” and acted alongside his father and grandfather in the Doctor Who 50th anniversary special, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Good Omens marks another collaboration between Ty Tennant and Neil Gaiman.

In conclusion, Season 2 of Good Omens introduces four minisodes that delve into the relationship between Aziraphale and Crowley. Peter Davison, known for his role in Doctor Who, portrays Job, while Ty Tennant, who has appeared in various TV series, portrays his son Ennon. The connections between these actors and David Tennant add an extra layer of intrigue to their performances. With its exploration of morality and its ties to biblical stories, Good Omens offers a unique and thought-provoking viewing experience.
