The latest addition to Warner Bros. Animation’s DC Universe Animated Original Movies line is the highly anticipated animated film Justice League: Warworld. Coming this summer, the film will feature the iconic trio of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, who will team up to bring together a resistance that can free an entire planet. The new trailer showcases the three heroes in different worlds, each set in different time periods. Wonder Woman, portrayed by Stana Katic, is seen in the old west alongside the DC Comics character Jonah Hex, voiced by Troy Baker. Darren Criss plays Clark Kent in a film noir-style world where Clark works with police to stop a group of attacking aliens while Jensen Ackles’s Batman fights monsters in an ancient world. Instead of his usual gadgets, Batman is seen fighting with a sword and a new costume that looks like gladiator armor. The trio discovers that they are on Warworld, a planet that thrives on brutal gladiatorial combat.
The planet Warworld was previously featured in the Justice League animated series as a two-part episode. Superman, voiced by George Newbern, was captured and forced into fighting for the planet’s entertainment by the alien Mongul, portrayed by Eric Roberts. William Smith played the combat champion of the planet, the alien Draaga, before Superman was captured.
Justice League: Warworld is part of the Tomorrowverse, the animated universe that debuted in 2020 with Superman: Man of Tomorrow. The film also introduces Ackles’s version of Batman, following his appearance in the two-part 2021 film Batman: The Long Halloween. Katic reprised her role as Wonder Woman, having previously voiced her in the Tomorrowverse film Justice Society: World War II. Although this will be the first Justice League movie set in the universe, there have already been crossovers. The end of Batman: The Long Halloween saw the appearances of Green Arrow and the Flash, searching for Batman in Wayne Manor. Additionally, both Batman and Superman appeared in the previous Tomorrowverse film Legion of Super-Heroes.
