The War Is Just Beginning

Editor’s note: The following contains spoilers for the finale of Secret Invasion. Throughout its initial five episodes, Secret Invasion has skillfully crafted an intriguing espionage narrative centered around Nick Fury (portrayed by the talented Samuel L. Jackson) and his interactions with the enigmatic Skrull aliens. Under the leadership of Gravik (played wonderfully by Kingsley Ben-Adir), the Skrulls have initiated a rebellion that tragically claimed the life of beloved former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill (masterfully portrayed by Cobie Smulders) with their initial strike. The story begins with the events of Captain Marvel and Fury’s promise to provide the Skrulls with a new homeland. In Episode 4, the true cost of this broken promise becomes evident as Fury loses his closest friend, the Skrull Talos (brought to life by the brilliant Ben Mendelsohn). Finally, in Episode 5, we receive the final pieces of Gravik’s grand scheme and gain insight into Fury’s role in it.

Penned by the talented duo of Kyle Bradstreet and Brian Tucker, and skillfully directed by Ali Selim, Episode 6, aptly titled “Home,” picks up immediately where the previous episode left off, with Gravik presenting Fury with an ultimatum. Gravik’s operative, Raava (played by the talented Nisha Aaliya) who has assumed the identity of James Rhodes/War Machine (brought to life by the incredible Don Cheadle), successfully convinces President Ritson (brilliantly portrayed by Dermot Mulroney) to launch a nuclear strike on the Skrull base in Russia. This devastating attack would ignite a catastrophic World War III and result in the loss of countless human and Skrull lives. However, Gravik proposes that if Fury surrenders the DNA collected during the Battle of Earth (as seen in Avengers: Endgame), the entire plan will be called off. It’s a no-win situation for Fury, but he remains undeterred, for he has a plan of his own.

The ‘Secret Invasion’ Finale Commences With Fury’s Encounter With Gravik

The episode commences with an emotionally charged phone call between Fury and his wife, Priscilla/Varra (portrayed by the talented Charlayne Woodard). It is clear that this call serves as a poignant farewell, as Fury enters into unknown territory with no guarantee of returning. Following the call, a car approaches the gates of New Skrullos (mirroring an earlier scene from Episode 1). The guards open fire, but to their surprise, Fury is not among those in the vehicle. After swiftly neutralizing the guards, Fury proceeds to enter the Skrull compound. Following the credits, we catch up with Rhodey/Raava, who remains steadfast in his endeavor to carry out the nuclear strike. The admiralty expresses hesitation in proceeding without concrete evidence of Russian collaboration with the Skrulls. Nevertheless, Rhodey persists, providing the President with live footage depicting Russian troops mobilizing along the borders of Ukraine and Finland. Raava has even prepared a persuasive speech for the President, urging him to authorize the strike.

Rhodey Receives a Pivotal Call From Sonya in ‘Secret Invasion’ Episode 6

Within New Skrullos, Fury navigates the eerily deserted compound. The lifeless bodies of Beto (masterfully portrayed by Samuel Adewunmi) and the other Skrulls who turned against Gravik remain where they fell, yet signs of living individuals are conspicuously absent. Fury has little time to ponder this as the radiation levels within the compound (formerly a decommissioned nuclear plant) begin to impair his respiration. He proceeds through the compound, plagued by coughing fits and visible tremors. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Rhodey receives an urgent call from Sonya Falsworth (superbly portrayed by Olivia Colman), advising him to relocate the President immediately and informing him that Fury is en route to their location. Rhodey questions the need to be concerned about Fury, but Sonya reveals that Fury has seemingly lost his sanity. Back at the compound, Fury ultimately reaches the reactor room, encountering Gravik, who awaits him with the Super Skrull machine. Inquisitively, Fury queries the whereabouts of the Skrulls, to which Gravik discloses that he has imprisoned them, effectively trapping them within the compound and preventing their escape from the impending strike. Fury attempts to alleviate his worsening symptoms of radiation poisoning by ingesting iodide pills. Unfortunately, he fumbles the bottle, causing the pills to tumble into the drain. Seizing this opportunity, Gravik offers Fury a toast to “the last stand of the great Nick Fury.” Simultaneously, Rhodey and his team relocate the President to an elevated floor, assigning agents to search for Fury. Tragically, the hunters soon find themselves being hunted by an unseen assailant. Meanwhile, in the reactor room, Fury’s condition rapidly deteriorates due to radiation exposure. Observing this, Gravik remarks that without the pills, Fury’s symptoms will exponentially worsen. Gravik then inquires about Fury’s contingency plan, questioning whether he had Avengers on standby, an invisible cloak and shield at his disposal, or if he recognizes the face Gravik has been assuming—the face of the very first human casualty at the hands of a Skrull, an event sanctioned by Fury himself. Gravik expresses astonishment at Fury’s apparent forgetfulness, for this horrifying incident marked a pivotal moment in the young Skrull’s life. That individual served as the first in a long line of victims, and Gravik still bears the burden of these atrocities, laying the blame squarely on Fury for exploiting the Skrulls as his personal spies. Gravik’s seething hatred for Fury is only matched by his disdain for Talos, whom Gravik believes transformed the Skrulls from a formidable warrior race to a destitute band of beggars. With righteous fury, Gravik concludes his final monologue, vowing to eliminate Fury and subsequently “incinerate humanity,” emphasizing that these tragic circumstances result from Fury’s failure to uphold his promise.

Unexpectedly, Fury surprises Gravik by admitting his failure. He candidly concedes that he knew from the onset that finding a new home for the Skrulls proved an insurmountable task. Yet despite this knowledge, Fury chose to deceive them, prolonging their hope. Constructing a new home for the Skrulls on Earth would have been the only way to fulfill his promise. However, Fury neglected this responsibility as it was far easier to prioritize preserving lives than to change humanity’s perception and beliefs, even for someone as formidable as Nick Fury.

Fury’s Secret Weapon Emerges as the MCU’s Most Powerful Hero

Finally, the seasoned spymaster divulges the emotions he experienced when he disintegrated during the snap: a profound sense of relief, knowing that he could finally cease his ceaseless warfare. He further reveals that his return to Earth stemmed from his resounding accountability to Gravik. As Secret Service agents at the hospital begin to fall one by one, Fury presents Gravik with the Harvest—the culmination of DNA collected from every combatant involved in the Battle of Earth. In return, Fury implores Gravik to take the Skrulls and depart Earth. Gravik accepts the Harvest from Fury just as Rhodey directs the President to a secure location. Unexpectedly, the President seizes a firearm from one of the agents, while elsewhere, the order to initiate the strike on New Skrullos is issued. Fury lies on the floor within the Super Skrull machine, his symptoms growing increasingly dire, as Gravik examines the samples, acknowledging that Fury truly desires an end to his suffering. Unbeknownst to Gravik, Fury still possesses a trump card. With his arm morphing into the likeness of the Hulk’s, “Fury” propels Gravik out of the structure, sending him hurtling through the debris. Emerging from the wreckage, G’iah (expertly portrayed by Emilia Clarke) unveils herself, cunningly persuading Gravik into granting her the very abilities he had stolen. It is important to note that G’iah now stands as the most formidable hero in the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe—possessing the combined powers of Captain Marvel, the Avengers, Thanos, the Black Order, and innumerable others.

Simultaneously, the real Fury indeed infiltrates the hospital, dispatching the remaining Secret Service agents. He confronts the President, instructing him to aim his firearm at Rhodey. In a climactic showdown, G’iah confronts Gravik, deriding him as “feeble” and “unfocused,” subsequently launching an assault. This sets the stage for the long-awaited, action-packed sequence, wherein Gravik and G’iah unleash an awe-inspiring display of power, channeling the abilities of various characters in a titanic battle. Throughout the confrontation, the audience witnesses echoes of Drax (portrayed by the outstanding Dave Bautista), Ant-Man, Korg, the Frost Beast, and countless others. Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Fury divulges the dire circumstances to the President, enlightening him to the fact that Rhodey has been replaced by a Skrull impostor, while the real Rhodey remains within the compound slated for obliteration by the impending bomb.

G’iah ultimately gains the upper hand momentarily, only for Gravik to utilize the powers of Ebony Maw to reestablish his dominance. Raava endeavors to convince the President to persist with the strike, as preparations for the devastating bomb reach their culmination. Determinedly, Fury pleads with the President, urging him to reconsider his decision. Just as it seems that all hope is lost, the tide turns. The President heeds Fury’s words and takes a stand against imminent tragedy. He calls off the missile strike moments before it would have cataclysmically altered history. In a thrilling turn of events, the Super Skrull machine powers down, revealing Gravik in his true Skrull form—a figure practically ablaze with immeasurable power. Gravik launches an offensive against Fury, who returns the assault with an unexpected ace up
