The utilization of the ‘Overview Effect’ by Virgin Galactic to market space tourism is a regrettable paradox.

The Overview Effect, a result of viewing Earth from space, has been described by astronauts as a profound connection to Earth that inspires environmental care. While Virgin Galactic promotes access to the Overview Effect as a major drawcard for its space tourism flights, it is a terrible irony that such flights are massively damaging to the environment. Space tourism produces black carbon particles that are nearly 500 times more efficient at warming the atmosphere than all surface and airline sources of soot combined. With a passenger limit of six, a Virgin Galactic launch emits 4.5 tons of carbon per person, more than twice the Paris Agreement’s recommended annual individual carbon budget. And while commercial pilots have experienced similar phenomena while flying at high altitudes, and environmental epiphanies can occur anywhere, including while reading a book at home, space tourism market is expected to be worth US$2.58 billion by 2031 and is growing at an annual rate of 17.15%. It is essential to scrutinize misaligned marketing tactics like Virgin Galactic’s promotion of the Overview Effect and to explore alternative ways to experience profound environmental connections with Earth without inflating our carbon footprint.
