During the recent Nintendo Direct on June 21, viewers were treated to an abundance of exciting Mario-related announcements. A peculiar and dreamlike trailer showcased during the Nintendo Direct gave us a sneak peek into what awaits us in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This brand-new game draws heavy inspiration from the style of the original New Super Mario Bros., which debuted on the Nintendo DS in 2006. However, it also introduces a plethora of fresh and exciting elements for players to explore.

Among the most notable additions are new power-ups for Mario to utilize. One particularly intriguing power-up showcased in the Nintendo Direct revealed Mario munching on a mysterious fruit and transforming into an elephant. If this is just a glimpse of what’s in store, who knows what other surprising transformations we’ll witness in Super Mario Bros. Wonder? While a carlike transformation akin to Kirby in Kirby and the Forgotten Land may be unlikely, we can always expect the unexpected!

In addition to new power-ups, the game features Wonder Flowers. When Mario interacts with these flowers, he unlocks wonders within the world he’s traversing, leading to unique shifts in gameplay. The trailer demonstrated instances where touching a Wonder Flower brought animated life to pipes, causing them to behave like caterpillars. Other wonders included plunging the world into darkness or summoning hordes of bulls. These dynamic elements promise a thrilling and ever-changing gaming experience.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder offers a multiplayer option, ensuring that the fun need not be enjoyed alone. Up to four players can partake in cooperative play, choosing from a range of classic characters such as Mario, Luigi, Toad, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, and Yoshi. Personally, I’m partial to Yoshi!

Furthermore, the game showcases new animations for Mario’s actions, showcasing an impressive attention to detail. For instance, watch how Mario’s hat falls as he enters a pipe, only for him to swiftly snatch it back up. These subtle nuances already have me captivated and eagerly anticipating the game’s release. As a child, I spent countless hours with my dad trying to conquer New Super Mario Bros., so I can’t wait to see what he thinks of this new adventure!

Mark your calendars, as Super Mario Bros. Wonder will launch exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on October 20. We would love to hear your thoughts on this exciting upcoming release!
