EDITOR’S NOTE: This article contains spoilers for Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One.
If you had the pleasure of watching Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One over the weekend, then you were treated to a remarkable performance by the iconic Tom Cruise as super spy Ethan Hunt. This latest installment in the action franchise has been making waves at the box office. While the film continues to attract new viewers, it has recently come to light that there existed an alternate version with a dramatically different ending.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One follows Ethan Hunt’s mission to retrieve a highly advanced AI device that could have catastrophic consequences in the wrong hands. Joining Hunt is Grace, played by the talented Hayley Atwell, who delivers a standout performance despite being a newcomer to the series. In the original ending, Grace was set up for betrayal.
In an interview with Variety, editor Eddie Hamilton revealed that the alternate ending would have featured Grace betraying the IMF at the worst possible moment. She would have tranquilized the team, including Hunt, and boarded the train alone to “attempt to obtain money from the buyer and negotiate her way out of the situation she’s in,” according to Hamilton. However, the test audience didn’t respond favorably to this idea, leading to the final version of the film.
The Mask of Redemption
The decision to stick with the current cut allows Grace’s redemption arc to come full circle, potentially positioning her as a valuable ally in the future following Ilsa Faust’s demise. The final cut also sets the stage for the thrilling mask scene, in which Atwell believes Grace is reborn. “I’m shedding the old identity of who Grace was in the first half of the movie when she realizes, ‘If I had taken the money, it would have been worth more than the key I gave away,'” Atwell explained.
