The Puzzling Riddles That Remain Unsolved Since Season 1

Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for School Spirits Season 1. On School Spirits, appearances are deceiving. Maddie Nears (Peyton List) wakes up in the afterlife as a spirit connected to Split River High School, where she presumably died. However, she has no recollection of her final moments or the events leading up to them. Strangely, Maddie’s memory loss sets her apart from the other ghosts who remember their deaths vividly. She befriends Charley (Nick Pugliese), Wally (Milo Manheim), and Rhonda (Sarah Yarkin), who serve as her guides in the afterlife. Mr. Martin (Josh Zuckerman), a former teacher, also continues to teach her in this new realm. What intrigues Maddie even more is her ability to communicate with her living friend, Simon (Kristian Ventura), who becomes her loyal companion in her quest to solve her own murder. COLLIDER VIDEO OF THE DAYSCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT As the first season progresses, Maddie and her friends unravel shocking revelations that redefine the entire narrative. In a surprising turn of events, Maddie discovers that she isn’t actually dead; her body has been possessed by Janet – a spirit presumed to have moved on before Maddie’s arrival. The departure of another spirit, Dawn (RaeAnne Boone), triggered a shift in the afterlife, but Janet’s “passing” went unnoticed, leading Charley and Wally on a wild chase. With Rhonda’s assistance, they uncover Mr. Martin’s deceit and his connection to Janet. Each revelation raises new and unanswered questions for the series. With a renewal for a second season, here are the most pressing queries: RELATED: The Best Shows on Paramount+ Right Now What is the hidden connection between Mr. Martin and Janet, and why did they lie? Image via Paramount+ After witnessing Dawn’s successful transition to the afterlife, Wally and Charley explore Janet’s history to understand how she moved on. They search newspaper archives but find no mention of Janet’s death in 1960, the year she supposedly died. However, they stumble upon an article about Mr. Martin’s demise, contradicting his earlier claims. It is revealed that Janet died with Mr. Martin in the old chemistry lab, which was later converted into a fallout shelter. Charley discovers a newspaper clipping where Janet’s parents accuse Mr. Martin of intentionally starting the fire. The question remains – what is the true nature of the relationship between Mr. Martin and Janet? Why did they conspire to conceal their connection? What is Mr. Martin’s objective? Image via Paramount+ After exposing Mr. Martin’s lies, Wally and Charley venture into the fallout shelter – the site of Mr. Martin’s death – to uncover more secrets he may be hiding. What they find shocks them beyond imagination. Mr. Martin has meticulously documented information about each spirit, collecting records over the decades. He possesses obituaries that he encouraged the ghosts to write for themselves. Rhonda arrives with evidence of personal items connected to each ghost’s demise, such as Rhonda’s Berkeley acceptance letter and Wally’s football from the game where he died. The collection takes an even stranger turn when they come across a notebook titled “thinning,” which delves into the ghosts’ final moments. Curiously, there is no mention of Janet in Mr. Martin’s notes. This discovery suggests that their connection predates their time in the afterlife. But what is Mr. Martin’s ultimate goal? While it may appear that he wants to take control of bodies, his attempt to dissuade Janet from possessing Maddie’s body suggests otherwise. Can Maddie reclaim control over her body? Image via Paramount+ This question presents a complex situation. Is it possible for Maddie to regain control over her body? Presumably, yes. But how? It is crucial to understand how Janet possessed Maddie in the first place. It was peculiar that Maddie, while alive, could see Mr. Martin and Janet in her body on her final day. There is a clear connection between this ability and the location of Janet’s death. Additionally, Janet has her own plans. In the season finale, she purchases a bus ticket and plans to leave town. Whether she succeeds or not remains uncertain, but her departure prolongs Maddie’s time with the other spirits and complicates matters. Furthermore, why is Janet evading Mr. Martin? Will Xavier survive? Image via Paramount+ The fate of one character hangs in the balance in the finale. Xavier (Spencer MacPherson), after stealing a tip from his father, Sheriff Baxter (Ian Tracey), visits an address with Claire (Rainbow Wedell) and Nicole (Kiara Pichardo) to uncover the identity of a burglar. A confrontation with a hooded figure leads Xavier to chase the person, who subsequently reverses the truck into him, knocking him down. As Nicole discovers that Maddie (Janet in Maddie’s body) was behind the wheel, Xavier realizes he is bleeding and loses consciousness. When first responders arrive, Sheriff Baxter is surprised to learn the seriousness of Xavier’s injury. Although it is likely that Xavier will survive, as Maddie’s actions would ruin any chances she has for a future if she regains control of her body, the possibility of his demise remains. What does this twist mean for the potential romance between Wally and Maddie? Image via Paramount+ Maddie’s revelation about her true state of existence will undoubtedly impact her relationships with everyone in School Spirits. She now has a chance to reclaim her life, putting her in an uncomfortable position with the spirits who are truly deceased and lacking any hope of salvation – unless Mr. Martin has a sinister agenda. While her friendships may endure, albeit with some bitterness, her romance with Wally faces significant obstacles. It seems that their connection is irreparably lost, not only because Maddie realizes the importance of Simon in her life but also due to the revelation of her true nature. Where do the ghosts go from here? Image via Paramount+ How will Mr. Martin’s betrayal affect the ghosts? He has been their guide, supposedly helping them find peace and move on. With his deceit exposed, do the ghosts’ beliefs about the afterlife still hold true? They will have to rely on each other more than ever, but they must also take matters into their own hands to discover how to move on. Has Mr. Martin jeopardized their chances with his schemes? Will any of the ghosts be tempted to aid Mr. Martin in exchange for a second chance at life, similar to Janet? How can Maddie convince Simon of her existence? Image via Paramount+ Finally, after Nicole sends Simon a video showing Maddie’s face, he concludes that the Maddie he’s been seeing is a product of his imagination. He believes this is his mind’s way of coping with Maddie’s absence, assuming she simply ran away without a care for him.
